Washington Racing Hall of Fame announces class of 2012 | Horse Racing

Jockey Paul Frey and trainer Wayne Branch head up a stellar field of 2012 Washington Racing Hall of Fame inductees, Emerald Downs announced Thursday.

Hilco Scamper, 1985 Washington Horse of the Year, and Rings a Chime, a two time state champion and 2000 Kentucky Oaks runner-up, are winners in the male and female horse division, while George Newell is honored in the breeding division.

Also, Emerald Downs Vice President Jack Hodge will be saluted for Lifetime Achievement, becoming only the sixth recipient of one of the state?s highest awards in Thoroughbred racing.

The Washington Racing Hall of Fame?s 10th annual induction ceremony is 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 18 at Emerald Downs, on the eve of the 77th running of the $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3).

Known as ?The Master? when he dominated Longacres with five training titles including three straight from 1961-63, Branch conditioned the great sprinter Lak Nak to eight stakes wins*usually with Frey riding*in the mid 1960s.

It?s natural that Branch and Frey would enter the Hall of Fame in the same year, as they combined to win some 500 races in Washington and Arizona in the 1950s and 60s. And like Branch, Frey was a mainstay at Longacres while winning titles in 1964 and ?66 and finishing fourth all-time with 810 wins. A native of Saskatchewan, Frey rode 2,479 winners in a 20-year career from 1953-72.

A 1983 foal by Knights Choice-Lucky Sport, Hilco Scamper won 14 races including six stakes in a 34-race career that featured victories in the Grade 2 Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park and Grade 2 Juvenile Championship at Hollywood Park. Trained by Mike Chambers, the electrifying gelding was one of the fastest juveniles in state history, and also proved his mettle as an older horse including several races against top quarter horses at 870 yards.A 1997 foal by Metfield-Outofthebluebell, Rings a Chime was named champion Washington 2-Year-Old and 2-Year-Old Filly in 1999, and champion Washington 3-Year-Old and 3-Year-Old Filly in 2000. Trained by Lonnie Arterburn, Rings a Chime was stakes placed eight times in 13 career starts, topped by a victory in the 2000 Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland and a second to Secret Status in the 2000 Kentucky Oaks (G1).

George Newell operated Newellhurst Farm, a 100-acre spread in Kingston on the Kitsap Peninsula, where leading sires Black Forest and Better Bet stood in 1940 and 50s. Newell also raced 11-time stakes winner How Now and Collaborator, who in 1958 became the last horse to sweep the Longacres Mile and Longacres Derby in the same year.

Business Insurance As A Factor Of The Risk Management Process ...

Santander Abbey had not complied with the statutory UK ?Code of Practice on Racial Policy in Employment? regarding Equal Opportunity Training. Mr Chagger had tried to resolve the issues surrounding his dismissal directly with Abbey Santander and Mr Hopkins, through the company?s grievance and appeals procedures. However, Santander Abbey had not provided any Equal Opportunity Training to any of the managers it had assigned to consider Mr Chagger?s issues; the Tribunal found that there existed at Santander Abbey a culture of tending to deny and refuse Mr Chagger?s issues, and his issues were simply dismissed out of hand by each and every manager who had been assigned to decide on them.

In an evolving organisation, nothing stands still. An effective risk assessment policy includes the capacity for re-evaluation and improvement. At a practical level, this will require the nomination of an individual or a group of individuals to the responsibility of ensuring that risk management policies and procedures are up-to-date, as well as the establishment of regular review cycles of the organisations risk management approach.

Risk management is essential to success in business. Most of us are very well equipped to manage risk and change effectively. Our everyday activities prepare us well. You can find numerous parallels in everyday life.

You don?t need consultants from top tier enterprise firms to get started with process management. Money management: in order to preserve your money and to see another trading day you need to have good money management capabilities i.e. you need to know and calculate the risk and potential gains of every trade before you enter the market. Good money management gives you the edge and advantage to control your trades. As you must have known every professional trader make loses once in a while in the currency market only they make few loses and more gains. So in other words always make use of stop losses and profit target like the experts do.

The monitoring of the external environment for risk management should be as diligent as the internal monitoring, because many of the internal risks are a direct result of exposure to external risks, many of which can be avoided, he said.

Patent smackdown: Apple teams up with Microsoft to bid against ...

The patent arms race is reaching a feeding-frenzy stage. Over the past months, we?ve witnessed a series of high profile legal spats between the technology companies that make our beloved gadgets. A quick recap of the most visible battles includes the Oracle vs Google trial, the Samsung vs Apple global conflagration, the Microsoft vs Motorola case that caused the ban of all Motorola devices in Germany, and the Apple vs HTC debacle, which affected the availability of the One X and the EVO 4G LTE in the USA.

Tech corporations are suing each other like madmen, but unfortunately, their actions mostly affect consumers. We get fewer products on the market, and the products that are available are made dumber. The war is likely to continue for the foreseeable future and the players are accruing weapons at a staggering rate.

A new stash of patents is about to be sold to the highest bidder. On Monday, the patent portfolio of Eastman Kodak, the legendary photography company, will be sold in an auction. Two major forces emerge as potential winners ? on one side, Apple allied with Microsoft and patent troll aggregation firm Intellectual Ventures. On the other side, Google got together with the biggest Android OEMs ? Samsung, HTC, and LG ? along with a patent troll of its own, the RPX Corporation.

The two consortiums will try to win the battle over Eastman Kodak?s 1100 patents, most related to photographic technology. Kodak has a great deal of intellectual property that could prove essential for anyone manufacturing a product that incorporates a digital camera. According to WSJ, alliances are still made and broken, and the situation is still in flux.

As a reminder, it wouldn?t be the first time Google would square off with the Apple-Microsoft team ? last year, Google lost the auction for Nortel?s patent trove, which eventually went to the Apple-Microsoft consortium for $4.5 billion. It?s unclear how valuable Kodak?s portfolio is, but experts seem to agree that it is far less valuable than Nortel?s stash.

We?ll keep you posted on any new developments next week.

Opening Ceremony London 2012: wit and charm on a midsummer's night

The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics offered China ? and the world ? a lesson. And yes, it crackled with British music, literature, and humor.

By Mark Sappenfield,?Staff writer / July 27, 2012

The Olympic rings light up the stadium during the opening ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics Friday in London.

Supposedly, it was London?s bad fortune to be the next Summer Olympics host after Beijing. Who, after all, could top that opening ceremony??

Instead, London offered China ? and the rest of the world ? a lesson.

Superpower? Been there, done that.

In an opening act rare among those in the history of Olympic opening ceremonies, the London organizers did something extraordinary: They were honest.

What other nation, in a moment of national glory that politicians pay billions of dollars to win, would allow such a view of their own country to be broadcast to the world?

One that has been there, done that, and no longer has anything to prove to anyone.

In a night that crackled with British music, literature, and humor ? yes, that was the actual queen with 007 ? it was an opening act about the Industrial Revolution that made this night as memorable as the one in Beijing four years ago.

Not for the pyrotechnics, which were impressive but not to be compared to Beijing, but for a story that dared to be heartbreaking ? that invited the viewer to consider how the Industrial Revolution that began in English mills rippled out to change the English countryside, the world economy, and the human condition.

This, to say the least, was a change of pace from four years ago.

The brilliance of the opening act was in its initial subtlety ? and perhaps impossible to fully appreciate on television. An hour before the ceremonies began, while the stadium was still silent but for the hum of the arriving crowd, the country village set in the center of the Olympic Stadium was inhabited.

Horses pulled carriages. Farmers actually harvested wheat. Boys played cricket. Girls danced around the maypole. When the live sheep entered, they got an ovation from the crowd.

Danny Boyle, the Oscar-winning director of ?Slumdog Millionaire? and the artistic force behind these opening ceremonies, was just setting us up. He was inviting us to become immersed and involved ? to watch the pretty couple playing badminton, to witness soccer become rugby as the players picked up the ball and started bowling through each other with childlike enthusiasm.

Pakistan unrelenting in demanding drone strike end

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) ? Pakistan's ambassador to the United States says her country will not relent from demanding that the CIA end its drone strikes.

In a debate with White House war adviser Douglas Lute at the Aspen Security Forum, Sherry Rehman said drone attacks have damaged al-Qaida but are now only serving to recruit new militants.

"I am not saying drones have not assisted in the war against terror, but they have diminishing rate of returns," Rehman said by video teleconference from Washington.

With Pakistan's spy chief, Lt. Gen. Zaheerul Islam, expected to hold his first meeting with CIA Director David Petraeus at CIA headquarters in Virginia next week, the ambassador said, "We will seek an end to drone strikes and there will be no compromise on that."

Lute would not comment on the drone program. U.S. officials have said privately that it will continue because Pakistan has proved incapable or unwilling to target militants the U.S. considers dangerous.

A long-sought U.S. apology to Pakistan over a deadly border incident cleared the way to restart counterterrorism talks. In addition to the end to drone strikes, Pakistani officials say they will ask the U.S. to feed intelligence gathered by the pilotless aircraft to Pakistani jets and ground forces so they can target militants.

While neither side expects much progress, officials from both countries see the return to dialogue as a chance to repair a relationship dented by a series of incidents that damaged trust on both sides. U.S. officials remain angry over what they say is Pakistan's support of Taliban groups, including the militant Haqqani network, that the U.S. contends are taking shelter in Pakistan's tribal areas and attack troops in neighboring Afghanistan.

But Rehman dismissed as "outrageous" the claim that Pakistan is harboring al-Qaida or other militants who intend to harm the U.S. She said Pakistan's army was working hard to combat the militants, including reporting 52 times to NATO in recent months when militants were spotted crossing into Afghan territory.

"Pakistan is maxed out on the international border with Afghanistan," she said.

"Sovereignty has privileges but also comes with responsibilities," countered Lute who called for Pakistan to step up its efforts and to cease "hedging its bets" by supporting the Afghan Taliban.

The two did agree, however, that Pakistan could help broker an eventual peace deal with the Taliban.

When asked why the Taliban would surrender ahead of the 2014 drawdown of U.S. troops, Lute said a recent security agreement with Afghanistan ensures a long-term U.S. commitment to Afghan security.

"The agreement we've made with Afghanistan signals to Taliban that they can't wait us out," Lute said. "If they want another decade of this, to get hammered every day and every night," U.S. and Afghan forces can provide.

If the Taliban are willing to disarm and respect the laws of the Afghan government, "the door will remain open to negotiation," Lute said.

A major grievance for Pakistan remains last year's U.S. Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil. The operation was conducted without Pakistan's permission.

Rehman defended Pakistan's arrest of Dr. Shakil Afridi, who has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison for aiding the CIA in tracking down bin Laden. Afridi conducted a vaccine program in the military town where the terrorist mastermind turned out to be hiding.

U.S. lawmakers have threatened to halt millions of dollars in aid to Pakistan unless Afridi is released, in recognition of his contribution. Afridi is appealing his sentence.

"He had no clue he was looking for Osama bin Laden," Rehman countered. "He was contracting with a foreign intelligence agency."

She added that Afridi's actions put thousands of children at risk because some vaccine programs had to be ended after Pakistani aid workers were targeted by the Taliban.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's support for Israel will likely earn the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a warm welcome from Israeli leaders when he visits on Sunday ? and a frosty reception from Palestinians, who fear he would do little to advance their stalled statehood dreams.

Romney is visiting Israel as part of a three-nation foreign tour that includes Britain and Poland. He hopes it will boost his credentials to direct U.S. national security and diplomacy.

The visit to Israel comes at a time when its leaders are weighing a military attack on Iran, the neighboring regime in Syria is looking increasingly shaky and Mideast peace talks are going nowhere.

Romney, a longtime friend of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is expected to play up his critique of President Barack Obama's posture toward the Jewish state and his handling of Iran's suspected nuclear weapons ambitions.

Israeli political scientist Abraham Diskin says Romney can expect an "enthusiastic" reception, both because of his solid record of pro-Israel comments ? and because he's not Obama.

"What interests Israelis is Israel," Diskin said. "Romney has a very pro-Israel stance. He is very suspicious of the Arab world. (Israelis) are very suspicious of Obama."

In an effort to upstage Romney a day before he landed in Israel, the White House announced it was signing legislation expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

Still, with polls showing a close race, Romney hopes this showcase for his pro-Israel stance will help him to woo votes from traditionally Democratic Jewish voters and evangelical Christians who zealously defend Israeli government policy. Obama has not visited Israel since he became president.

Romney already has stumbled in his first international swing as presidential contender by suggesting that British officials might not be prepared to pull off a successful Olympics. In an interview with NBC News, he called London's problems with games preparation "disconcerting," and the remark sparked sharp responses from Britain's top officials.

In Israel, Romney will be meeting with Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Israeli opposition leaders.

He will not see Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Abbas aide Nimr Hamad said, though he will be sitting down with the Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, in Jerusalem. Neither the Romney nor Abbas camps would explain why a meeting with Abbas was not on the agenda.

Romney's relationship with the U.S.-educated Netanyahu dates back decades, when they briefly overlapped in the 1970s at Boston Consulting Group, and the two men share conservative outlooks. A Romney bankroller, Sheldon Adelson, is financing a free Israeli newspaper that reflects Netanyahu's views.

Netanyahu has refused to endorse either presidential candidate, although his ties with Obama have been fraught.

"I will receive Mitt Romney with the same openness that I received another presidential candidate, then-Senator Barack Obama, when he came almost four years ago, almost the same time in the campaign, to Israel," he said when asked about the visit last Sunday on Fox News. "We extend bipartisan hospitality to both Democrats and Republicans."

Romney ? like most politicians who make the trek to Israel ? is likely to face questions such as whether he would endorse calls by some fellow Republicans to move the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his stance on Israeli calls for Washington to release convicted spy Jonathan Pollard.

Romney has consistently accused Obama of putting too much pressure on Israel to make concessions to the Palestinians and of being too weak on Iran. He says he wants to present a clearer military threat to the Islamic Republic, with a stronger naval presence in the Gulf. Tehran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.

At a war veterans' convention in Nevada this week, Romney accused Obama of being "fond of lecturing Israel's leaders."

"He has undermined their position, which was tough enough as it was," Romney said. The "people of Israel deserve better than what they have received from the leader of the free world."

Obama rejects the criticism and points to unprecedented security cooperation with the Jewish state.

Three years after he came into office with Israeli-Palestinian peace at the top of his foreign policy priorities, Obama recently acknowledged that his efforts there have failed. Peace talks have been deadlocked more than three years.

Obama, who tried to persuade the Arab world that he was an honest broker, lost the Palestinians' trust by refusing to follow up tough talk with action when Israel defied his call to halt settlement construction on occupied land Palestinians seek for a future state.

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank has refused to resume negotiations without a settlement construction freeze and went ahead with a statehood campaign at the United Nations, over the president's objections.

Palestinians fear Romney would be softer on Israel than Obama. Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi said that would doom any chance for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and establishing a Palestinian state on lands Israel captured in the 1967 war.

"American foreign policy in the region is shaped by Israel and determined by what's good for Israel, and not even what's good for the U.S.," Ashrawi complained.

Romney "will probably try to take it a notch higher," she said, and if the U.S. refuses to put any pressure on Israel, "then there's no chance for peace."

Obama's tense relations with Netanyahu have created the perception that U.S.-Israeli relations have deteriorated. During one of Netanyahu's White House visits, Obama extended none of the trappings, like a joint news conference, usually accorded to an important ally.

Obesity Theories Challenged By Hunter-Gatherer Study - Kiefit.com

A new study comparing the lifestyle of Westerners with that of hunter-gatherers challenges the idea that the current obesity crisis is due to lack of physical activity. The researchers suggest the more likely explanation is over-consumption of calories, particularly due to the presence of energy-dense foods in the Western diet. The researchers write about their findings in a paper published online in PLoS ONE on 25 July...

Video of record-setting Chip Yates electric plane flight shows power loss, dramatic deadstick landing

We've chronicled Flight of the Century founder and CEO Chip Yates' record-breaking 202.6MPH flight in his Long-ESA EV craft before. What we didn't quite touch on, however, is the power loss Yates' aircraft suffered after earning that electric plane speed record. Now Yates has released new video of the flight, which includes the moment his aircraft breaks the record, the ensuing power loss and his dramatic deadstick landing. That smile you see in the photo up there is the smile of a man who just made history and is also happy to be alive. Hey, we're glad he's safe, too. You can witness the close call yourself by checking out the video after the break.

Is demand rising for furnished rentals? | Real Estate | South Philly ...

3 factors to consider before advertising unit

3 factors to consider before advertising unit

Robert Griswold
Inman News?

Q: I have a rental home and can't seem to find any qualified tenants. Recently, a friend of mine who is also a landlord told me that all of his rental properties are full, and he credits the fact that they are furnished as being the key difference. Should I consider buying furniture for my property and offering it as a furnished home?

A: The majority of rental properties are offered unfurnished, because most tenants already have their own furnishings. In urban areas, short-term renters may need furnished units, but this is a specific market that is usually addressed by one or more major apartment owners or hospitality companies. However, in some suburban or rural areas there is a demand for furnished rental units for short- or long-term rentals. This is especially true for larger rental homes.

You need to determine who your target market is and if the specific location of your rental home will be in demand. You may consider offering your home partially or fully furnished. Talk to real estate agents in your area and ask their opinion, as they are likely to be the first ones to hear about prospective tenants who are looking for furnished rental homes. But remember that furnishing your rental property is a major investment.

Another factor in favor of going to a furnished rental strategy would be if your rental home is adjacent to a major employer that regularly relocates employees into the area, as you can often generate significantly higher rents for a furnished rental property.

But also remember that there will be fewer prospective tenants for a large furnished rental home, and the loss of rent due to vacancies between tenants can also be a concern.

Do your homework and gather as much information as you can to decide whether furnishing your rental home is worth a try.

Q: We moved into our rental more than two years ago and have a dog. The manager at that time assured us a pet was OK, and we even paid a pet deposit. Our dog is well behaved and has caused no problems. We now have new management, which is implementing a "no pets" policy. We have been on a month-to-month rental agreement since our initial one-year lease expired. Management said it is going to serve me with a notice that says the dog must be removed in 30 days. Can management evict our dog?

A: Pets may be kept at rentals as long as there is no restriction against them. When there is a lease, it limits what you can have or do as a tenant as long as that limitation language is legal. Sometimes leases have terms that are not legal and do not count even though the tenant signs it. Also, certain promises made when leasing may have a legal effect even if not in writing.

In this case, you were promised that a pet would be OK, and you probably would not have rented it without that promise. That is helpful but not necessarily binding. The other side of the issue is that a month-to-month tenancy agreement provision can be changed with 30 days' notice. Here, legal eviction protections do not directly apply since this is not an eviction of you but a change in your ongoing tenancy. The law allows certain rental agreement changes, but the law also protects tenants from landlords breaking promises. Here the challenge is proving the verbal promise with the prior manager and then making that promise binding for such a long time.

Normally, verbal agreements regarding real property must be in writing if they are to cover a period of more than one year. If you refuse to remove the dog after 30 days, management may try to evict you in court where you would then have a judge decide on how strong that promise was. The better way to protect yourself may be to get permission for a pet clearly in writing, including in a month-to-month contract, that says the pet may remain during the tenancy even if other terms of the agreement may change.

Israel court again postpones Migron outpost evacuation

Israel's Supreme Court on Friday agreed again to postpone the evacuation of the Migron settlement outpost -- set for August 1 -- by 20 days.

Friday's decision to postpone the evacuation was the second such delay agreed upon by the court.

On Sunday, the state had asked the court -- which had ordered the outpost to be razed -- for more time before beginning the evacuation in order to submit documents, following settler claims they had recently bought part of the outpost's territory.

Israel state attorney's office also argued that an evacuation during the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan could prove difficult, due to possible retaliatory attacks by settlers.

The court decision on Friday said the state would be able to submit its response by August 19, and that a hearing would take place on August 21. The order to raze Migron has been extended till the hearing, the court said.

Migron, the largest and oldest settlement outpost in the West Bank, was ordered razed by the end of March, since it was built on private Palestinian lands.

But the court had later agreed to extend the deadline to August 1 and Friday's decision to postpone the evacuation was second such extension of the deadline.

Some Migron families are resisting evacuation claiming they have recently bought some land on the outpost and a ministerial committee formed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked the state to request to allow them to remain there.

But on Sunday the representative of the state attorney's office, Osnat Mandel, said that a police probe was underway into the possibility that the documents these families submitted claiming they bought the land were fake.

Israel considers settlement outposts built without government approval to be illegal and often sends security personnel to demolish them. They usually consist of little more than a few trailers.

The international community considers all settlements built in the West Bank -- including east Jerusalem -- to be illegal.

UK's FTSE steadies, digesting mixed earnings

    * FTSE 100 closes steady after three days of losses

    * Corporate earnings in focus

    * GlaxoSmithKline weighs most after weak results

LONDON, July 25 (Reuters) - Britain's top share index

steadied on Wednesday, pausing after three days of falls thanks

to a mixed batch of corporate results that pitted a weak showing

in Europe for GlaxoSmithKline and BT against a sterling

    performance for chipmaker Arm.

The international backdrop also offered conflicting signals,

with weak U.S. data on the one hand and growing hopes of fresh

steps to combat the euro zone crisis on the other.

At the close, the FTSE 100 index was broadly flat at

    5,498.32 points, taking a breather after a three-session losing

streak. V o lume was once again weak, at two-thirds of its 90-day

    daily average.

"With seven FTSE 100 companies reporting today, and 13 due

to update the market on Thursday, we'll have had a fifth of the

UK blue chips reporting in just two sessions. It'll take

analysts and strategists a while to chew through all the

details, but so far the earnings season is looking more mixed

than positive in the UK," said Mike Mason, a trader with Sucden

    Financial Private Clients.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), down 1.3 percent, was the

biggest drag on the index, as the group warned that sales in

2012 will be flat and posted below-forecast second-quarter

results due to weakness in the European markets.

"Overall, a slightly disappointing quarter for GSK with a

slight miss both on revenues and EPS, but this is not very

unexpected - GSK had clearly been signaling a weaker Q2 was

likely. The longer-term growth with GSK continues to look

comparatively good," Bernstein Research said in a

    note.

The pharmaceuticals heavyweight shaved around 4 points off

    the FTSE 100 index.

A lacklustre showing in crisis-hit Europe also hurt

performance at British telecom group BT, down 3.3 percent

as its quarterly results came in below analysts' forecasts.

Espirito Santo Investment Bank analysts described the results as

    "a little soft". [ID: nL6E8IP3G5]

Results were not always the top focus, though. Tullow Oil

shed 6.3 percent in heavy volumes, as investors focused

on risks and costs associated with its proposed Uganda

development, shrugging off an in-line rise in first half

    profits.

On the upside, ARM Holdings, up 8.6 percent, was the

top gainer trading in high volume of almost twice its 90-day

daily average, with the chip designer's results beating market

expectations as demand for its low power chips in smartphones

    and tablets outstripped the industry.

Banks, up 1.2 percent, were the biggest

positive weight on the index, after European Central Bank

policymaker Ewald Nowotny raised the prospect of steps that

could boost the firepower of the euro zone's new bailout fund

earlier on Wednesday spurring a Europe-wide share rebound,

particularly in the heavily sold indexes of Spain and Italy.

HSBC, which reports earnings next Monday, was up

1.4 percent leading the sector and providing it with the biggest

    individual support.

Energy stocks were also among the best performers, led by

oil major Shell , up 0.8 percent, which sealed an

exploration tie-up with China's state-run oil firm CNOOC

on Wednesday in a move which will help secure longer

term growth from projects in the world's energy-hungry second

    largest economy.

Lace plants explain programmed cell death

    Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Programmed cell death (PCD) is a highly regulated process that occurs in all animals and plants as part of normal development and in response to the environment. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Plant Biology is the first to document the physiological events in the lace plant (Aponogeton madagascariensis) which occur via PCD to produce the characteristic holes in its leaves.

The aquatic lace plant, endemic to Madagascar, uses PCD to generate holes in its leaves. Researchers from Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, used long-term live cell imaging, time-lapse micro-photography and detailed staining to see what actually happens inside individual cells of the lace plant leaves during this process.

PCD always begins in the centre of areoles (areas surrounded by veins) and works its way out, finally stopping four or five cells away from the vein. Within these areoles the stage of PCD can be visually determined by pigmentation. Non-PCD cells contain anthocyanin which is pink. As PCD progresses (early-PCD) the anthocyanin disappears but green chlorophyll remains. By late-PCD, both of these pigments have been lost.

Arunika Gunawardena, who led this research, described what actually happens in more detail, "After the loss of anthocyanin, we saw a reduction in the number and size of chloroplasts concurrent with changes in the actin cytoskeleton, which normally supports the cell from the inside. Actin cables became thicker, but their arrangement became more haphazard (until late-PCD when they began to disappear)."

As PCD progressed chloroplasts and mitochondria (the energy centres of the cell) began to aggregate together and were brought into the acidic vacuole to be degraded - a process that was confirmed using 3D image analysis. Additionally, the researchers found evidence of autophagy (where the cells literally begin to 'eat' themselves from the inside) and discovered organelle-like remnants inside vesicles.

Dr Gunawardena continued, "For each cell we observed, eventually the tonoplast ruptured, and the plasma membrane surrounding the cell collapsed. It only takes 48 hours from the first noticeable loss in chlorophyll until the plasma membrane shrinks, and by 24 hours after this event the cell wall disappears."

This is the first research to use such a variety of visual techniques to look at a process that affects almost every cell type at some stage of an organism's life. These pictures and videos provide a fascinating insight into how the lace plant has high-jacked PCD to produce its quirky, yet beautiful, leaves.

Q&A ? Safe Alternatives to Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen or ...

One of the most common questions we are asked is regarding the safety of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAID?s) for dogs or cats. Inflammatory conditions like arthritis can cause a lot of pain for pets and desperate pet parents are often tempted to reach into their own medicine cabinet for relief, but are they safe to give to a dog or cat? Are there natural alternatives?

Part of the confusion comes from the fact that all of these over the counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers are different, even though they treat the same condition in a similar fashion. Confusion also stems from Veterinary recommendations for temporary use, leading pet guardians to mistakenly assume NSAID?s can be used as casually as they are in humans. Anti-inflammatory medication should never be given to any animal without consultation with a veterinarian to determine dosage, drug interaction, and complications with existing medical conditions or pregnancy.

Following are several common Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs that may be prescribed for your dog or cat, along with their associated dangers and side effects. Since we do not believe they should be administered without the guidance of a veterinarian, we will not provide a recommended dosage.?Cats are highly sensitive to all NSAID?s described here due to their limited glucuronyl-conjugating capacity. Ferrets are also far more sensitive to Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs than dogs. Both may suffer the symptoms of toxicosis even at half the recommended dosage for dogs.

Can dogs or cats have asprin, motrin, advil anti-inflammatory NSAID?Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) may be sold under the brand of Aspirin or generics, and can be taken internally or applied topically. Most dogs tolerate Aspirin well in low doses from a toxicosis point of view. However, they are more sensitive to gastric irritation and may begin to suffer damage in as little as two days of use. Cats are much more sensitive to Aspirin than dogs, primarily due to glucuronyl transferase deficiency and the length of time it takes them to excrete the medication.

Ibuprofen (iso-butyl-propanoic-phenolic acid) may be sold under the brands Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, Medipren, etc. It is sometimes used for dogs but it has a narrow margin of safety. Gastric irritation may occur, including perforation and ulceration. Cats are susceptible to ibuprofen toxicosis due to a limited glucuronyl-conjugating capacity.

Naproxen (derivative of propionic acid) may be sold as Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Naprelan, etc. It is similar to Ibuprofen and may be prescribed to dogs with acute arthritis pain. Cats are highly sensitive to Naproxen due to glucuronyl transferase deficiency.

Acetaminophen (nonopiate p-aminophenol derivative) may be sold as Tylenol or as generic acetaminophen. It?s often added to other drugs for the treatment of pain and inflammation. Acetaminophen causes less gastric irritation and damage than other NSAID?s. Liver damage may occur with excess or long term use, especially in dogs (Liver Necrosis). Cats are more susceptible to acetaminophen toxicosis than dogs due to glucuronyl transferase deficiency.

    Natural Anti-inflammatories for Pets

There are many anti-inflammatory foods and herbs that can be easily incorporated into your pet?s diet to reduce or prevent inflammation. Make your own homemade pet treats and pet food, or some fresh foods may be accepted alone. Freshly dehydrated foods & herbs can easily be mixed into wet food (we get many of our fresh dried herbs from Starwest Botanicals).

Not all of the foods listed below are appropriate for all species (such as cats), but dogs will tolerate and digest them well if they aren?t allergic. Remove any pits before feeding.

    Sardines (Omega 3)
    Anchovies (Omega 3)
    Salmon (Omega 3)
    Striped Bass (Omega 3)
Freeze-dried Krill (Omega 3, Astaxanthin carotenoid)
Organic pasteurized eggs (Fatty acids, Choline)
Extra-virgin olive oil (Omega 3 & compounds that inhibit the production of the inflammatory chemicals, much like NSAID?s)
Peppers (Antioxidants, carotenoids, Vitamin C, capsaicin)
Dark leafy greens (Antioxidants, carotenoids, Vitamin C)
Seaweed (Eicosapentanoic acid, folate, Vitamin C & K)
    Turmeric (bioflavonoids and polyphenols)
    Rosemary (bioflavonoids and polyphenols)
    Ginger (bioflavonoids and polyphenols)
    Green tea (bioflavonoids and polyphenols)
    Blueberries (flavonoids, carotenoids, Vitamin C)
    Blackberries (flavonoids, carotenoids, Vitamin C)
    Mango (Antioxidants, beta-carotene, vitamin C & E)
    Apples (Boron)
Whole grains such as oatmeal, brown rice, and barley (Lowers levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), an inflammation marker)
Alkaline Water (soft acidic water can be countered with the addition of a dash of Calcium Montmorillonite Clay in the water dish)

Guest Blog: Is your business software moving you forward?or ...

By Lane Sorgen,?General Manager, South Central District, Microsoft Corp.

Few business owners and IT professionals have the luxury of making investments without a high level of confidence that those purchases will deliver a return. And while this compels most businesses to conduct research before deciding where to spend their dollars, an expenditure on business productivity software is an increasingly complex decision requiring a significant amount of upfront knowledge.

And knowledge of the signs and repercussions related to non-genuine software is, indeed, power. While the right software can drive significant improvements in business efficiency and effectiveness, non-genuine software not only delivers no return, it can rob a business of data, time, money and its reputation. These are risks that the average business simply can?t afford to take.

Consider how valuable every moment of time you and your co-workers spend on the clock is. Then consider this: A Harrison Group study investigating the impact of unlicensed software on small- to mid-sized companies found that companies using unlicensed and/or counterfeit software were 73 percent more likely to have loss or damage of sensitive data, and 43 percent more likely to have critical computer failures lasting 24 hours or more than those using fully and properly licensed genuine software.

Pirated and counterfeit software, usually purchased without knowledge of its illegality, exposes businesses to layers upon layers of problems. Users running pirated, unlicensed software typically cannot access essential patches and updates to guard their systems against security threats such as trojans and worms like Conficker, a leading cyber risk outlined in Microsoft?s recently published Security Intelligence Report (SIRv12). In the 12th edition of this report, SIRv12 analyzed more than 600 million systems worldwide. Among many findings, the report found that the Conficker worm was detected approximately 20 million times worldwide in the past two and a half years.

The study also revealed the worm continues to spread because of weak or stolen passwords and vulnerabilities for which a security update exists. Identifying these gaps in business security processes is incredibly powerful. With this information, Microsoft suggests businesses implement computing best practices to protect themselves:

    • ? Use strong passwords
    • ? Keep systems up to date by regularly applying available updates for all products
    • ? Use antivirus software from a trusted source
    • ? Invest in newer products with a higher quality of software protection

Fortunately, there are many tell-tale signs that software may do more harm than good, which can halt the purchase and implementation of an illegal software product in the first place.? Microsoft offers numerous guidelines for the criteria to use when buying productivity software at www.howtotell.com, and a few ?non negotiables? that verify Microsoft products are genuine include:

    • A Certificate of Authenticity
    • A hologram CD, DVD, or recovery media
    • High-quality product packing and documentation
    • An End-User Agreement

Take steps to protect your business from cyber threats so that nothing stands between you and success. ?Many resources are available to help businesses protect themselves from the threats outlined here, and more: Microsoft tips on how to avoid purchasing non-genuine software and Microsoft?s anti-piracy website are all tremendous resources to help you utilize productivity software to move your business forward, despite cyber criminals? best efforts to hold you back.

Creative Notions - Self Improvement Made Simple - Bairded302's blog

People seem to have the misconception that only a select few are able to unleash a steady flow of creative genius. That is not true at all. The fact is, creativity is very much like a muscle that needs to be exercised in order to consistently give out great results. If you don?t practice harnessing creative thinking, this skill will very much atrophy into inexistence. But keep working and this skill will soon come to you in a snap.

So how do you unleash your creative thinking? Well, the first thing is to become a human leech. No, we?re not talking about just sucking the blood out of every living being available, we?re saying that you should take in as much knowledge and learning you can find. Read everything available ? good and bad, and keep your mind open to the infinite possibilities of the universe. The more you know, the more you?ll want to know, and the more your faculty of wonder will be exercised. Prepare to be amazed at little facts that add a bit of color into your life.

Focus on a creative activity everyday. Yes, it?s an effort. Even doodling is a creative activity. Don?t let anything hinder you. Mindlessness may be a creative activity, but for people who are just starting out to unleash a little bit of creative thinking in their lives, it is helpful and encouraging to have concrete evidence, that, ?hey, what I?m doing is getting somewhere.? So why don?t you try it. Practice drawing for a couple of minutes each day. Bring out your old camera and start snapping photos like crazy. Keep a journal and make a point to write in it religiously. Another cool idea is to write by describing something with your five senses. Try to avoid vague adjectives like ?marvelous,? ?amazing,? and ?delicious.? Before you know it, you?ll have built yourself a tiny portfolio, and you?ll be amazed at the growth you?ve undertaken after amassing all those works of art. Who knows, you might actually take to liking those things you do everyday. Pretty soon those things will become a part of you and you?ll be addicted to these creative exercises.

Think out of the box ? or don?t. Sometimes, constraints are actually a good thing. Limitations discipline you to work within your means. It enables you to be more resourceful. Creative freedom is great, but limitations enforce discipline.

Try something new everyday and let your experiences broaden your perspective. Explore a new district in your neighborhood. Spend an afternoon in a museum to which you?ve never been before. Chat up someone on the bus. Open up to the people around you. As you thrust yourself out of your comfort zone more and more each day, your sense of adventure grows and so does your zest for life. Think about it. When was the last time you did something for the first time? If it?s been a while, I tell you, you?ve been missing out on a whole lot of experiences that could?ve added to your growth, emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. Why don?t you try bungee jumping today? Not only will you learn, but you will also have plenty of stories to share, enabling you to practice your storytelling skills and making you the life of the party.

Embrace insanity. No, not to the point of practically admitting yourself into the mental ward. As John Russell once said, ?Sanity calms, but madness is more interesting.? Exactly! Every creative thought was once deemed insanity by other ?normal? people at one time or another. Luckily, that didn?t stop the creative geniuses from standing by them. The thing is, sanity or being normal confines people to think? well, normally. Withink limits. Creativity is essentially breaking through barriers. Yes, this includes the bizzarre and the downright strange. I?m not saying that you yourself should develop a creative personality. That might go haywire. An example of a creative personality would be George Washington, who often rode into battle naked, or James Joyce, who wrote ?Dubliners? with beetle juice for an intense fear of ink, or Albert Einstein, who thought his cat was a spy sent by his rival (or in thinking creatively in this case, the term could probably be ?archnemesis.?) It?s important that your creativity doesn?t get you detached from the real world completely.

I hope this article has inspired you to start thinking beyond your ?limits.? If you follow these steps pretty soon you?ll be living a life full of interesting adventures. Unleashing your creative thinking? will bring about a new zest for living life.

Generally when it contains a collection of blogs linking to another website with his comments about the page that the link is headed. So that it becomes a sort of catalog website to the links in the select-based public opinion.
