Mercep Trial: Documentary Aired as Evidence :: Balkan Insight

At the trial, which was continuing after the summer break, Mercep's 1991 interview with a Serbian TV was shown as were several Croatian television 1991 news items from the Pakrac and Gospic area, where Mercep's unit operated.

Pavilion 22, a 55-minute film from 2002, was made by Croatian documentary maker Nenad Puhovski through his independent production firm, Factum. Croatia's state television bought the film but never aired it.

In the film, several former members of the "mercepovci", their victims, politicians, judicial experts and NGO activists, testified about the unit's activities, saying they illegaly arrested people in Zagreb and collected them in pavilion 22 of the Zagreb International Fair before transferring them to Pakracka Poljana.

The then Croatian minister, Zivko Juzbasic, who is to testify in the trial, said in the documentary that the pavilion was a private detention camp, calling it "a black stain in the history of the Croatian capital, Zagreb".

Miro Bajramovic, another former member of the "mercepovci",? also testified in documentary. In 1997, he told the Croatian weekly Feral Tribune that he had personally killed 70 people while working with the mercepovci.

He later stood trial and was jailed for four years following that admission but nobody else was charged over the crimes.

Bajramovic confirmed in the film that the civilian detainees, mostly ethnic Serbs, were imprisoned and tortured in the pavilion before transfer to Pakracka Poljana.

Mercep is charged, as a commander of the unit, with having personally ordered the?unlawful arrest, torture and killing of civilians from October 8, 1991 until mid-December 1991 in?and around Zagreb and in the towns of Kutina and Pakrac in central Croatia.

He was captured in December 2010. The trial started in February this year. Mercep was released from custody this July due to health considerations.

The trial continues on September 11.

Saturn and its largest moon reflect their true colors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Posing for portraits for NASA's Cassini spacecraft, Saturn and its largest moon, Titan, show spectacular colors in a quartet of images being released today. One image captures the changing hues of Saturn's northern and southern hemispheres as they pass from one season to the next.

The images can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/cassini,http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org .

A wide-angle view in today's package captures Titan passing in front of Saturn, as well as the planet's changing colors. Upon Cassini's arrival at Saturn eight years ago, Saturn's northern winter hemisphere was an azure blue. Now that winter is encroaching on the planet's southern hemisphere and summer on the north, the color scheme is reversing: blue is tinting the southern atmosphere and is fading from the north.

The other three images depict the newly discovered south polar vortex in the atmosphere of Titan, reported recently by Cassini scientists. Cassini's visible-light cameras have seen a concentration of yellowish haze in the detached haze layer at the south pole of Titan since at least March 27. Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer spotted the massing of clouds around the south pole as early as May 22 in infrared wavelengths. After a June 27 flyby of the moon, Cassini released a dramatic image and movie showing the vortex rotating faster than the moon's rotation period. The four images being released today were acquired in May, June and July of 2012.

Some of these views, such as those of the polar vortex, are only possible because Cassini's newly inclined -- or tilted -- orbits allow more direct viewing of the polar regions of Saturn and its moons.

Scientists are looking forward to seeing more of the same -- new phenomena like Titan's south polar vortex and changes wrought by the passage of time and seasons -- during the remainder of Cassini's mission.

"Cassini has been in orbit now for the last eight years, and despite the fact that we can't know exactly what the next five years will show us, we can be certain that whatever it is will be wondrous," said Carolyn Porco, imaging team lead based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Launched in 1997, Cassini went into orbit around Saturn on July 1, 2004. It is in its second mission extension, known as the Solstice Mission, and one of its main goals is to analyze seasonal changes in the Saturn system.

"It is so fantastic to experience, through the instruments of Cassini, seasonal changes in the Saturn system," said Amanda Hendrix, deputy project scientist, based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "Some of the changes we see in the data are completely unexpected, while some occur like clockwork on a seasonal timescale. It's an exciting time to be at Saturn."

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Northern Arizona News ? Economics refutes irrational gun laws

by Kiersten Turnock?

This is part of a Point/ Counterpoint Column about possibly placing restrictions on gun purchases. Click here to see the other side of the argument.

(Political cartoon by Brian Regan)

?Guns don?t kill people, people kill people.? The long-time debate about gun control seems to be never-ending in the United States and has become even more prevalent this summer as a result of the shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin. With this recent spree of mass shootings, a large portion of the population is advocating for stricter gun laws, citing the argument ?fewer bullets, fewer deaths.? While this is all said and fine on paper, it fails to take into account the economics of gun laws and the potential repercussions of harsher laws and further government interference.

These advocates are assuming the only reason people like James Holmes commit murder is because Colorado has ?lax? gun laws. Ideally, if Colorado were to implement stricter gun laws and make firearms harder to obtain, mass shootings like this would not happen or would happen less frequently. These people, quite simply put, are idiots with absolutely no concept of the economic theory of ?substitutes.?
Substitutes are goods used to replace the preferable good when the latter is not readily available or may be harder to obtain. For example, if I go into a restaurant and order a Diet Coke, but the restaurant serves Pepsi products, regardless of how I feel about Coke vs. Pepsi, I am more likely to substitute the Diet Pepsi for the Diet Coke than I am to leave the restaurant.
So, just as I am willing to substitute Diet Pepsi for Diet Coke to get my fill of zero calorie cola, a serial killer is willing to substitute a different weapon or method of killing people to find their means to the end. This analogy illustrates it is not guns that kill people, but the willingness to kill and determination to satisfy that end.

Implementing stricter gun laws merely provides incentive for the murderer to commit the crime in a more creative way. The problem, therefore, does not lie in the freedoms allotted to citizens to carry guns, but in the society we live in which has brewed the motives for people to kill.

Holmes? crime exemplifies one way our society has created a breeding ground for mental illness. Holmes molded his crime as a sort of ?tribute? to the Joker in The Dark Knight. The argument could be made if we didn?t live in a society that thrives on drama and violence, movies like The Dark Knight ? however mind-blowing they may be ? would not be in such high demand. As movies become more and more violent and creative, demand in turn rises for something even more epic to be produced. ?In order to meet societies? demands, Hollywood creates these films and completely negates the fact our country and society encompasses extreme mental instability that is easily molded by propaganda.

Ever the advocate for the supply and demand curve, I wish the solution was as simple as reducing demand for violent and suspenseful films. Unfortunately, corruption in the media is only one factor of our post-industrial society that influences mentally ill people to kill. However, the fact still remains, implementing stricter gun laws will do nothing to correct the factors that cause people, like Holmes, to have the need or desire to kill people. If someone is going to commit murder, they will do it regardless if it is with a gun, an axe, a knife, a bomb or a combination of the four. The only problem a law is going to solve is ensuring the victims of the crime will be injured or killed in a slower and/or more creative way.

faithtuppers - Evolution of the Home Computer | Computer How To ...

Guest post by Paul Faulk.

In today?s times, having a home computer has become a necessity for families to keep in touch with the social world, do online research, or simply browse the web. Having a home computer has not always been a common household item, however. The home computer has gone through decades of technological upgrades to reach its modern status leading up the world of search engines and SEO that we know today.

computer evolution

Origins of the Home Computer

The first freely programmable computer was created in 1936, and it took years of programming, technological development, and research to evolve the computer into a room-sized processing machine. Computer powerhouse Hewlett-Packard is founded in 1938 in a Palo Alto garage, where David Packard and Bill Hewlett designed an audio oscillator which became a popular piece of testing equipment for computer engineers across the nation. HP entered the consumer computer business after creating the HP-2115 computer that offered computational power that could originally only be found in massive computer systems.

In 1944, a professor from Harvard University completed the Harvard Mark-1. This massive computer filled an entire room and was built to produce mathematical table. During the 1940s, companies on the allied side of the second World War were constructing computers to decipher secret Nazi codes that were intercepted, a function that today?s computers would not need to do.

In 1958, Texas Instruments built the first integrated circuit for computers.?After nearly two more decades of program research and increases in technology, famous computer mastermind Bill Gates and partner Paul Allen found the Microsoft Corporation in 1975. A year later, the late Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) and began selling Apple 1 computer boards.

computer mess

Modernized Home Computers

The 1980s brought a wave of computers for personal use. IBM introduced its own PC in 1981, which ignited the the rapid growth of smaller more compact personal computers for home use. The Osborne 1, created by Adam Osborne, was the world?s first portable computer. This 24 pound machine cost around $1800 and had a five inch display screen. Commodore introduced the C64 in 1982. It is recognized today as the highest selling computer model in the world by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Apple launched its first iconic Macintosh computer in 1984, which was the first mouse-driven computer with a graphic user interface. In 1990, the world wide web as we know it was created. A physics laboratory in Geneva created what they called the HyperText Markup Language, or HTML, and the HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. In order to browse the web, the Mosaic web browser was released in 1993. This program allowed graphic content for access on the Internet.

The improvements to the computer made from the 1930s to the 1990s is nothing compared to the technology of today. Researchers today are working on virtual reality, processors the size of needles, and improved resolutions on portable computers. Technology today is growing exponentially, so in upcoming years we can expect great things to be created.

Overview of the history of SEO

After Yahoo launched and became a great success in the early 90s, the popular search engines of today Google and DMOZ launched in 1998. Because of Google?s success, Yahoo dropped their Altavista program to use Google?s algorithm. In Google?s algorithms, page rankings were displayed to users through the toolbar. This then had a significant impact in the business world, because companies then desired to rank higher up on search engine search results pages.

SEO

Thus, SEO was born. Search engine optimization allowed businesses to beat their competition and appear higher on search results. To do this, companies manipulated the Google algorithms to make their website rank. It all involves having a large amount of content and referring domains for your website. Google then sees these websites as having a strong supporting background and legitimacy, so they rank these sites higher than others. Google then introduced their Caffeine Algorithm in 2009, which caused a major shift in SEO because companies had to change their SEO tactics. In addition, Google had a Panda Algorithm Update in 2011, followed by a Penguin Algorithm Update in 2012. This updates to the search programming made SEO even more difficult for companies.

Essentially, early computers were not designed around search engines. But recently, computers focus on social more than ever. Companies are focusing on getting their name out there, and through search engine optimization, they can do so.

Domestic Violence: women are half the problem ? M a s c u l i s M.ca

Domestic ViolenceIt appears our brothers and sisters in Australia, by hanging posters around the campus of Monash University, have attracted the attention of concerned citizens, including the National Women?s Officer ? based on a message posted in the Australian Clayton Feminists Working Group.

Their problem appears to be the message of one of our posters which reads: ?Domestic violence, women are half the problem?.

Obviously, this is an extremely condensed and simplified message, since it is intended for presentation on a poster, and a detailed exploration of all its implications would be ineffective if presented in poster format. Nobody would read it. That is why the poster also includes the domain address of A Voice for Men ? where domestic violence and many other problems are discussed in detail, including in an article written by Paul Elam several years ago that was the namesake of the posters: Domestic Violence: Women are Half the Problem.

The poster, succinct in its message reflects the reality that domestic violence which as a significant problem does not occur in a vacuum, but does occur in the context of violent relationships. In addition it reflects the fact, established and confirmed by a growing body of peer reviewed research[1][2][3][4][5][6] that the popular public narrative of violent men abusing innocent, female victims is at best only a partial representation of the reality of DV, and at worst, a deliberate fabrication.

In the real world, outside the expensively produced public service announcements in which brawny male actors pantomime assaults on decorative and waif-thin female actors in advertisements and entreaties to fund this or that women?s shelter ? real world domestic violence is driven by factors a bit more complex and nuanced that the canonical narrative of ?male violence?. And the professionals working to ameliorate the problem of intimate partner violence know it. Poverty, drug addiction, previous childhood abuse of adults, psychological disorders are just a handful of contributing factors which lead both men and women to participate in reciprocal violence within domestic relationships.

This misleading popular narrative; that DV is sexually directional, and solely the issue of violent men abusing women is a problem for two clearly identifiable reasons.

1: Public maintenance and promotion of a false narrative ? the myth of one-sided male-against-female violence has the effect of cultivating fear and hostility between men and women, hatred of men by women, and resentment and disaffection toward women by men. The narrative of innocent female victims and violent angry men serves to cultivate hatred and fear between men and women who would otherwise be one another?s natural compliments. The false narrative of bad men and good women is socially toxic.

2: The popular model of domestic violence, that of violent men and innocent female victims ? because it does not reflect real-world domestic violence, is doomed to fail where it is used as the framework of any effort to reduce or eliminate DV. Anti violence activism, programs or public policies cannot succeed if they are built on a theoretical model which does not correspond to reality.

Combatting the problem of DV from a false model of sexually one-sided aggression is as useful as fighting a structure fire by spraying water on only the North and East facing walls, and letting the South and West facing walls burn freely. Approaching the serious issue of domestic violence using a known broken model may even exacerbate and amplify the problem.

Of course, all of this, even in the summarized format presented in this discussion is far too much to fit neatly onto a poster. Thus, the poster employed a terse condensation of these facts into the simple statement; Domestic Violence, women are half the problem.

However, the response to this poster and its message, from the Australian National Women?s Officer, appears from the point of view of AVfM?s editorial board, peculiar.

Here is the body of the message posted by Sally D?Am?lain to the Clayton Feminists Working Group on facebook.

?A message from Noni the National Women?s Officer, similar kind of campaigning to what we were talking about in the meeting today by ways of having the ability to show support from all different sorts of people for our efforts:

?This one is especially for the pro-feminists out there. In response to the ?A voice for men? and their claims about domestic violence I was hoping we could get some pictures (like this one but with men) of people taking a webcam photo of themselves with ?In my own voice? and then some kind of statement anti-violence against women. It will take like 5 minutes and would be a really great thing to do. Please, please, please do it! This is only an example you can use whatever ?In my own voice: I don?t condone violence against women? ?In my own voice: I?m a part of the solution? whatever you can think of! I would love you forever.

Peculiar to say the least. The message doesn?t seem at all to address the content, or the veracity of whether domestic violence is a sexually bi-directional issue, or in formulating an effective strategy to ameliorate the problem of continued domestic violence in the real world. Rather, the message here appears to be entirely concerned with managing public perception.

Its as if maintaining a narrative is more important than addressing the problem of violence. But it might be worse even than that. In the example position statements requested that members of the public provide, each statement of opposition to violence includes the limiting clause; ?against women,? as in??anti-violence against women? and ?I don?t condone violence against women?

If we start from an assumption that the goal is reduction or elimination of domestic violence, this doesn?t make any sense. Even a basic writer?s guide to style and rhetoric, such as Strunk and White indicates a preference for simplicity of message.

?Use short sentences.?

Obviously, because the limiting clause ?against women? is nearly omnipresent in feminist anti violence rhetoric, it must be meaningful, and simple opposition to violence (against everybody) isn?t the intended message.

And this realization, assuming we interpret such rhetoric correctly indicates a goal apart from any real opposition to violence ? whether against women only or otherwise.

Why maintain a narrative incorrectly portraying intimate partner violence as sexually one sided when it is clearly reciprocal and bi directional?

Why oppose violence in rhetoric which uses a standard limiting clause ? suggesting to a readership informed on the issue of DV that male targeting violence is to be ignored?

Why address the published reality of sexual reciprocity in the commission of domestic violence with a campaign of spin, and public opinion rather than a fact or research-based address of the veracity of that statement made in poster form; that in fact, in matters of domestic violence; women are half the problem?

One possible explanation suggests itself, and it is included here as a hypothesis only, in the absence of a better explanation.

Maintenance of a narrative of domestic violence as sexually-specific; only aggressive, angry men, abusing innocent and victimized females ? is emotionally satisfying. Despite its falsehood, it fits neatly into the maintained mythology ? and taps into all of our natural desire to protect women from harm.

The more nuanced reality that intimate partner abuse and violence is sexually bi-directional, and that men and women are both victims and perpetrators of DV ? this doesn?t tug so neatly on our emotions, and thus, doesn?t provide DV service agencies as ready and quick a pathway to all our wallets for donations.

In addition, the salaried employees and directors of DV service and aid providers, if they were to significantly reduce the problem of domestic violence , would effectively put non-trivial numbers of themselves out of jobs. There is no profit motive is actually reducing domestic violence ? which may be why a broken, dysfunctional model of DV is used in almost all efforts to ?reduce? the problem.

But surely, this view is incorrect, and such cynical, mercenary disregard for actual human damage and suffering couldn?t really be what informs the policies of service agencies and (ahem) non-profit organizations run along gender-ideological lines. No, of course not.

Which is why this public letter is being written and posted, obviously, a genuine desire to reduce domestic violence and its associated long term human damage is the motivation of both AVfM as well as DV service providers and their supporters in Australia.

For that reason, this letter is an open invitation to members of Australian National Women?s Officer and the Clayton Feminists Working Group to join the discussion and contribute here on AVfM with the long term goal of a rational and effective public policy on domestic violence ? leading to long term amelioration of violence against men, women and children inside and outside the family and in intimate relationships.

Magnetic vortex reveals key to spintronic speed limit

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? he evolution of digital electronics is a story of miniaturization -- each generation of circuitry requires less space and energy to perform the same tasks. But even as high-speed processors move into handheld smart phones, current data storage technology has a functional limit: magnetically stored digital information becomes unstable when too tightly packed. The answer to maintaining the breath-taking pace of our ongoing computer revolution may be the denser, faster, and smarter technology of spintronics.

Spintronic devices use electron spin, a subtle quantum characteristic, to write and read information. But to mobilize this emerging technology, scientists must understand exactly how to manipulate spin as a reliable carrier of computer code. Now, scientists at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory have precisely measured a key parameter of electron interactions called non-adiabatic spin torque that is essential to the future development of spintronic devices. Not only does this unprecedented precision -- the findings to be published in the journal Nature Communications on August 28 -- guide the reading and writing of digital information, but it defines the upper limit on processing speed that may underlie a spintronic revolution.

"In the past, no one was able to measure the spin torque accurately enough for detailed comparisons of experiment and mathematical models," said Brookhaven Lab physicist Yimei Zhu. "By precisely imaging the spin orbits with a dedicated transmission electron microscope at Brookhaven, we advanced a truly fundamental understanding that has immediate implications for electronic devices. So this is quite exciting."

Speed Limits

Most prevailing technology fails to take full advantage of the electron, which features intrinsic quantum variables beyond the charge and flow driving electricity. One of these, a parameter known as spin direction, can be strategically manipulated to function as a high-density medium to store and transmit information in spintronics. But as any computer scientist can attest, dense data can mean very little without enough speed to process it efficiently.

"One of the big reasons that people want to understand this non-adiabatic spin torque term, which describes the ability to transfer spin via electrical currents, is that it basically determines how fast spintronic devices can be," said Shawn Pollard, a physics Ph.D. student at Brookhaven Lab and Stony Brook University and the lead author of the paper. "The read and write speed for data is dictated by the size of this number we measured, called beta, which is actually very, very big. That means the technology is potentially very, very fast."

Building a Vortex

Consider the behavior of coffee stirred rapidly in a mug: the motion of a spoon causes the liquid to spin, rising along the edges and spiraling low in the center. Because the coffee can't escape through the mug's porcelain walls, the trapped energy generates the cone-like vortex in the center. A similar phenomenon can be produced on magnetic materials to reveal fundamental quantum measurements.

This color graphic, seen here above an actual image of the vortex core captured by the transmission electron microscope, shows the trapped spins moving around the permalloy sample, which then generate the conical vortex core rising out of the center.

The Brookhaven physicists applied a range of high-frequency electric currents to a patterned film called permalloy, useful for its high magnetic permeability. This material, 50 nanometers (billionths of a meter) thick and composed of nickel and iron, was designed to strictly contain any generated magnetic field. Unable to escape, trapped electron spins combine and spiral within the permalloy, building into an observable and testable phenomenon called a magnetic vortex core.

"The vortex core motion is actually the cumulative effect of three distinct energies: the magnetic field induced by the current, and the adiabatic and non-adiabatic spin torques generated by electrons," Zhu said. "By capturing images of this micrometer (millionth of a meter) effect, we can deduce the precise value of the non-adiabatic torque's contribution to the vortex, which plays out on the nanoscale. Other measurements had very high error, but our technique offered the spatial resolution necessary to move past the wide range of previous results."

Disk Density

The high-speed, high-density hard drives in today's computers write information into spinning disks of magnetic materials, using electricity to toggle between magnetic polarity states that correspond to the "1" or "0" of binary computer code. But a number of intrinsic problems emerge with this method of data storage, notably limits to speed because of the spinning disk, which is made less reliable by moving parts, significant heat generation, and the considerable energy needed to write and read information.

Beyond that, magnetic storage suffers from a profound scaling issue. The magnetic fields in these devices exert influence on surrounding space, a so-called fringing field. Without appropriate space between magnetic data bits, this field can corrupt neighboring bits of digital information by inadvertently flipping "1" into "0." This translates to an ultimate limit on scalability, as these data bits need too much room to allow endless increases in data density.

Nanowire Racetracks

One pioneering spintronic prototype is IBM's Racetrack memory, which uses spin-coherent electric current to move magnetic domains, or discrete data bits, along a permalloy wire about 200 nanometers across and 100 nanometers thick. The spin of these magnetic domains is altered as they pass over a read/write head, forming new data patterns that travel back and forth along the nanowire racetrack. This process not only yields the prized stability of flash memory devices, but also offers speed and capacity exceeding disk drives.

"It takes less energy to manipulate spin torque parameters than magnetic fields," said Pollard. "There's less crosstalk between databits, and less heat is generated as information is written and read in spin-based storage devices. We measured a major component critical to unlocking the potential of spintronic technology, and I hope our work offers deeper insight into the fundamental origin of this non-adiabatic term."

The new measurement pins down a fundamental limit on data manipulation speeds, but the task of translating this work into practical limits on processor speed and hard drive space will fall to the scientists and engineers building the next generation of digital devices.

Zhu and Pollard collaborated with two physicists specializing in nanomagnetism, Kristen Buchanan of Colorado State University and Dario Arena of Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), to push the precision capabilities of the transmission electron microscope. This research was conducted at Brookhaven Lab's Department of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science.

Rule The Roost With These Fun And Creative Home Improvement Tips

Prior to hiring any professional to do a home improvement project, check his or her credentials. You should always be sure that anyone you hire is qualified for the work they will be doing, and that they employ the high standards in their work. Many common mishaps could have been avoided by ensuring your professional has the proper credentials.

Do you feel a draft in your home? There are new products on the market that use air as insulation. Just common air. Think of it in the same way that you can insulate a package using bubble wrap. Plastic cushions contain air and they are placed in your ceilings and walls. This is a cost effective way to re-insulate a drafty home.

You can make a kitchen look new without spending a lot of money. Meanwhile, stainless steel is all the rage, but why throw out your trusty fridge because the color doesn?t suit your taste? You can purchase inexpensive spray paint for your appliances and paint them almost any color imaginable. Using this product, you can spruce up your appliances quickly and easily.

Even modest home improvement projects can increase the resale value of your home. If you are planning to sell the house you live in, make some small improvements. You could just give the interior and exterior of your home a new paint job. Something as simple as this, which costs you only one or two hundred dollars, can increase the value by nearly one thousand dollars!

Use varnish over wallpaper to create an inexpensive, simple kitchen back splash. Select wallpaper you like. You should always cut the wallpaper somewhat larger than the area you???re covering based on measurements you?ve taken. Apply paste and make it stand there for a few minutes. Hang your wallpaper on the wall and slowly run over the area with a squeegee to remove bubbles. Using a razor knife, trim the edges if needed. After the wallpaper is dry you can brush on a thin coat of varnish to waterproof the wallpaper you?ve applied to your wall. There you have it; a new back-splash!

A garage door that is re-painted will add curb appeal to any home. This can be a quick way to update the look of your house. A fresh coat of paint makes your whole house look newer and more valuable. While you could paint the door a standard color, such as white, consider changing things up by choosing a contrasting color that compliments your home.

Windows with clear glass can lead to your home losing nearly a fifth of its heat. To help save energy costs, have your windows glazed.

To make your walls look their best, you do not necessarily need expensive artwork, you can decorate the walls with tiles. Use three dimensional tiles in two colors such as green and white and arrange them on the wall (rotating colors) behind your couch for an original kind of art.

How does the CPU really affect gaming performance? | ITProPortal ...

Conventional wisdom holds that when it comes to gaming, your CPU doesn?t matter all that much. Ever since 3dfx launched the original Voodoo 3D accelerator, we?ve strived to offload more and more work to a dedicated GPU, leaving the CPU free to handle other tasks. Nvidia and AMD have driven this trend for the past 12 years, first with dedicated hardware transform and lighting (T&L) and again when Nvidia launched the G80 back in 2006.

Conventional wisdom, it turns out, is moderately wrong. Scott Wasson at Tech Report has just published a major investigation into the topic. Instead of simply measuring average frames per second (fps) or providing a Min/Max/Average grouping, Tech Report also breaks down the data by frame time (graphed over the benchmark run). The term ?frame time? refers to the time (in milliseconds) that it takes to render each frame. For example, a perfectly steady 60 fps rate has a frame time of 16.67 milliseconds (1/60).

Frame times are a less familiar metric than frame rate, but they capture an issue that standard fps measurement doesn?t. Even a Min/Max/Average plot is a graph of static values, measured in one second intervals. The human visual system, however, is capable of detecting variations in motion speed over a considerably shorter period of time.

Wide variations in frame time create split-second stutters that the eye sees and notices, even if the game runs at an average of 60 fps. This is sometimes referred to as microstuttering, though that term is generally reserved for describing a particular type of GPU latency when rendering in a multi-GPU configuration.

Examining CPU performance with frame times gives a very different perspective on their relative performance. Tech Report tested multiple games on a vast range of CPUs; I?ve borrowed a single comparison between two chips in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to illustrate the difference.

Here you can see the average frame rate, the time each chip spent above 16.7 milliseconds (meaning how often did it take the CPU more than 16.7ms to draw the frame), and what the draw time was for the bottom 99 per cent of frames. The fps difference between the Core i5 and AMD?s X4 980 is significant ? the i5 is 30 per cent faster ? but the Phenom II is still way above the 60 fps threshold. Compare the amount of time spent above 60 fps, however, and the gap becomes an ocean. The X4 spends more than five times as much time below the 60 fps mark. This translates into more stutters of the sort that the human eye picks up on.

Relative performance between Intel and AMD depends on the game, but there?s a significant gap between the two companies overall. The Phenom II X4 980 remains AMD?s best overall gaming CPU and many of the Intel chips are grouped in a relatively small space. Overall, performance is still mostly GPU dependent, but this work shines a light on areas where CPU choice can still make a modest difference.

You can read more at Tech Report.

Juninho, Dunivant lead Galaxy past FC Dallas

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:35 p.m. ET Aug. 26, 2012

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Juninho and Todd Dunivant scored second-half goals to help the Los Angeles Galaxy beat FC Dallas 2-0 on Sunday.

Juninho tucked away a feed in the 66th minute from Jose Villarreal after the rookie forward stripped Dallas defender Matt Hedges about 15 yards outside the Hoops' box and raced past goalkeeper Kevin Hartman on the left. Juninho first-timed the shot into a virtually open net.

Dunivant scored in the 84th after sending a pass to Robbie Keane in Dallas' box, then racing forward for a penetrating ball from Michael Stephens.

The victory moved the Galaxy (12-11-4) within three points of second-place Seattle and third-place Real Salt Lake in a tight battle behind Western Conference leader San Jose. Dallas (8-12-8) is five points behind Vancouver in the fight for the fifth and final Western playoff berth.

Putting the Oooh in Tattoo....by Bob Sanders - Sidebars

?

Bennie ("Poppa") Andrews celebrated his 100th birthday recently.? A party celebrating his? life was held at the Blaine Boat Center and it was a delightful experience as friends and relatives paid homage to a man of impressive good fellowship.? Once a Heronwood resident in Bellingham's Cordata Neighborhood, Poppa used to live down the street from us with son Ben and Ben's wife, Dee.? Poppa now resides at Blaine's Stafholt Good Samaritan Center.

Blaine, located immediately south of the Canadian border, is about as Fourth Corner as one can get and a trip of considerable length for many of the Andrews clan who came from as far away as North Carolina and Texas.? Musical entertainment for 50 attendees was provided by Poppa's grandchildren and great grandchildren and this tough audience found himself applauding enthusiastically.

The celebration was, in many ways, a throwback to those days when I was growing up, when this country had its priorities in reasonable order, and when politics were discussed rationally.? As an irresistible observation, Poppa's party goers were totally free of tattoos although it's true I don't have Superman's X-ray eyesight.??

Those of us of relatively advanced years?(I'll be 87 next May, a suggestion that my longevity bottle is half-full) become increasingly aware of "the age thing" as we observe a changing America panting for the latest electronic fad.? A recent and frightening study tells us that 16 percent of those who text in public merely fake such action, apparently fearful of social intercourse of a non-technical nature.? Those who text and wear headphones at the same time are presumed to be particularly guarded while the added wearing of both Obama and Romney campaign buttons obviously add an exclamation point to such behavior.? Hey, folks, get a life.? I got one a long time ago.

Sometimes I wonder what I might choose as tattoo art were I to take the unlikely plunge and add a decorative note to my flesh?? Would I recognize the past or express hope and glad tidings about the future?? Would I pay homage to, say, the Works Progress Administration (WPA) that did so many good things--schools and artistic achievement among them back in FDR's era--or, perhaps, suggest that this country's last war of any merit was World War II?? Maybe, an effective tattoo would be the number of total U.S. military deaths achieved by the politicians who send our people off to such foolishness as our continuing misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan?? That number since 1946 would be 152,965 and we're still counting.? But wait.? What about civilian casualties now believed to represent 90 percent of ALL casualties?? At that point, we're talking well over a million total casualties.? I think the left forearm where Hitler forced Jews to wear an identification number in some of his concentration camps would be an appropriate place.

Then there's that remarkable gaggle of Republicans who have run afoul of a party no longer willing to embrace what they once stood for.? As we gird ourselves for the Republican National Convention now pushed back at least a day in what will soon be a very damp?Tampa, let us remember that such stalwarts as George W. Bush, Dick Cheney (war criminals if ever there were two), Condoleezza Rice, and Sarah Palin are among the vast array of non-speakeres for the party.? How quickly they forget.? Perhaps an appropriate tattoo, representing how far to the right the party has moved, might be a stoutly written shout: "I Remember Barry Goldwater" or "Dick Cheney...the Voice of Reason."? I'd feel compelled to somehow work the Halliburton logo into a Cheney remembrance.

The fertile field of politics certainly deserves additional inspection as a tattoo possibility.? I'm particularly drawn to those U.S. House members of the GOP (Tea Party Division) who, sufficiently boozed up, frolicked naked a year ago in the Sea of Galilee where Jesus reportedly walked on water.? Highly inclined to boast of a flawless America, the TPers performed in outstanding hypocritical fashion while conducting spirited blasphemy.? Of course, we shouldn't expect too much from people with a 10 percent approval rating.? In terms of honoring the event, a proper disfigurement might show a naked TPer walking on the waters of Galilee.

How could I possibly not bring into consideration Wall Street whose greed and criminal minds have produced such outrageous financial mendacity with prison?no more threatening than the last firefly of summer.? Maybe a line such as "I've Got Mine" accompanied by the logos of such greedmeisters as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and all the rest would do the trick.? John Corzine, who lost track of a couple of billion dollars, also is hard to ignore.? Perhaps a tattoo of Corzine's head, complete with a green beard composed of Woodrow Wilson $100,000 bills, would be appropriate.

Then there's the sporting world with so much potential one hardly knows where to begin.? A good start would be Penn State, the biggest collegiate loser in a long time thanks to?pedophile coach Jerry Sandusky, university leaders who looked the other way for 15 year and the dumbed down townfolk of State College who managed to acquire a major case of selective deafness.? No question that a tat of coach Joe Paterno (his now-removed statue comes to mind) would be in better taste than a Sandusky remembrance.

Fealty also could be paid to gang membership although I've never been a gang member being much too anti-social.? I neither tweet nor do I have hundreds of "friends" on a Facebook wall largely because I don't need any more than I have.? Other than viewing "Westside Story," I don't know anything about gangs but the pussycat Jets and Sharks would appear to be choices of contrst to today's violence.? I guess that's further proof of our worsening America.? How about the orginal black and red "West Side Story" logo to suggest how tranquil were gangs in the good old days?

States like Florida and Texas offer great potential for tattoo spoofs.? Not attempting in any way to invade?Palin's?new words turf, but we could call such body art tatspoofery."? Both states have a lot of crazies both real and in training.? Florida's unique approach to automobile driving education is, as actor Spencer Tracy used to say: "cherce."? He meant "choice" and we accept Tracy's version of New Yorkese as he plays a?shady sports promoter in "Pat?and Mike."??

As discussed in a recent column, Florida has a lot of drawbacks as a place to live although the old folks there have a chance in the upcoming election to right what went wrong in 2000 when the state was stolen.? Driving among?oldsters is always?challenging but an out-of-touch legislature is currently displaying a reluctance to pass a single distracted driving law.? While more than 70 percent of Florida voters support a ban on text messaging while driving, the legislature has been turning down safety bills since 2006 when the problem was timidly referred to as "hands free."? Maybe some body art involving an alligator texting behind the wheel would do the trick.? Another possibility would be calling attention to Florida's glory as the fraud capital of the U.S.? The reputation was established long before Bernie Madoff ripped off friends and relatives in Palm Beach, his favorite hunting ground.? Fraud complaints, the largest of any state, numbered 130,449 last year.? Dead beat Florida also led the Nation in home foreclosures and identity theft and had impressive credit card debt records with four cities in the top 25.? We'll save Texas for a later date; it's just too big to squeeze into this week's space.

I'm not?sure how I'd handle the challenge of a tattoo since there's always a tomorrow when people, contronted by my adornment, might mutter something along the lines of" "What about Bob?"? Highly satisfactory would be Mort Sahl's most repeated line:"The future lies ahead."? It makes sense to honor one of our truly great humorists.

Then, again, maybe I'd skip the?ink job and?opt for a piercing.? Being retired and essentially un-hireable, I wouldn't be fearful of not being employed as a waiter, a considerable problem for many tat-bedecked young people who must obey strict codes of attire that often include dirty jeans of four-inch overload and cover-up Band Aids.? There's nothing quite as startling as an exasperated diner exclaiming: "Look,?there's an earring in my soup."

One thing's for certain should I throw some business at the body art community.? I'm not letting any of the body piercing types near my navel.? Having recently noted the onrush of interest in golf's belly putter, I wouldn't want to impair what is becoming the anchor position of putting deliverance.? After all, I might return to the game and join the Senior Tour.

Syria wages new onslaughts on two main cities

Syrian forces launched a deadly assault in the southwestern belt of Damascus on Saturday, in what activists said was a new bid to crush "once and for all" the insurgency in the capital.

Combat helicopters and tanks also pounded rebel-held areas of the battered northern city of Aleppo, an AFP journalist and monitors said, as the army pressed on with its war against fighters seeking to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

The fresh violence erupted a day after new international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi admitted he was "scared" of the enormity of the task he faces to try to end the increasingly ferocious conflict, now in its 18th month.

Brahimi, who takes over from former UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan next month, held talks with UN leaders in New York on Friday, saying the Syrian people "will be our first masters."

Annan, a former UN chief, quit earlier this month after the failure of his six-point plan to try to bring peace, which was left in tatters by the relentless bloodshed and divisions among world powers over how to tackle the conflict.

In the latest in a string of such cases, dozens of bodies were found in the town of Daraya, southwest of Damascus, where troops have been waging a fierce assault against rebel holdouts, a monitoring group said on Saturday.

And at least 23 civilians, including two women and three children, were killed in gunfire and summary executions in Daraya, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, bring the death toll in the town to more than 120 this week alone.

"Security forces have launched a campaign of arrests, and residents are anxious and afraid that there will be another civilian massacre" in Daraya, said the Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground.

State television, for its part, said Daraya was being "purified of terrorist remnants."

The army claimed to have retaken most of Damascus in late July, after about two weeks of intense fighting across the capital's southern belt.

Most rebel Free Syrian Army fighters were forced out into the nearby countryside, but have since resumed hit-and-run operations, according to activists.

In Aleppo, an AFP correspondent reported heavy shelling by tanks in several neighbourhoods, sending civilians scrambling for safety as exploding shells sent up clouds of smoke and dust.

As rebel snipers faced off against the government's heavy armour, long breadlines formed in several neighbourhoods, including Qadi Askar where a fight broke out as people queued in the hot afternoon sun.

Rebels said earlier this week they controlled 60 percent of Aleppo but the regime has dismissed the claims and said Thursday the army had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods, where residents are largely pro-Assad.

Opposition fighters said they were digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, the once thriving commercial hub where the regime had warned last month of "the mother of all battles."

"The situation? They are trying to advance in the area, we're holding them back, but there are a lot of wounded and martyrs," said one rebel commander in Saif al-Dawla neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, the body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed this week during a gunfight in Aleppo was flown home on Saturday.

Mika Yamamoto, 45, was the fourth foreign journalist killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fierce fighting erupted in the city last month.

An American, a Turk and a Jordanian journalist of Palestinian origin are still missing.

August is already the deadliest single month of the conflict with more than 4,000 people killed, according to the Observatory, which reported at least 118 people killed nationwide on Saturday.

It says more than 24,500 have been killed in the 17-month revolt, which began as a peaceful uprising against Assad's rule but has descended into a bloody civil war with no early resolution in sight.

The United Nations puts the death toll at more than 17,000 -- up sharply from the 9,000 it reported when Annan's ill-fated ceasefire was first introduced in April.

A troubled UN observer mission also wrapped up last week and the team's chief, Senegalese General Babacar Gaye, left Damascus on Saturday.

Damascus has said it is ready to work with Brahimi and voiced hope he could pave the way for "national dialogue," while also suggesting it was ready to discuss Assad's exit as part of any negotiated solution.

An Iranian delegation was in Damascus on Saturday for talks with Syrian officials, a day after Tehran -- the regime's staunchest ally -- said it would submit a plan for ending the conflict at a Non-Aligned Movement summit next week.

Tehran's initiative comes as its foes in the West seek to ramp up the pressure on Syria, with Washington and London threatening possible action if Damascus uses its chemical weapons and Paris voicing support for a partial no-fly zone.

International concerns are also mounting over the humanitarian crisis both in Syria and neighbouring countries after the United Nations said that the flow of refugees fleeing the fighting has jumped to at least 202,500.

Biden scraps trip to site of Republican convention

Vice President Joe Biden has canceled a trip to Tampa, with Tropical Storm Isaac threatening the Florida host city of the Republican National Convention, the Democratic campaign said.

President Barack Obama's reelection campaign cited "disaster preparedness and local security concerns," for putting off the trip that had been set for Monday, as a visit by the vice president would require significant mobilization of local law enforcement and federal authorities.

The change in schedule "is being taken out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all local law enforcement and emergency management resources can stay focused on ensuring the safety of people who might be impacted by the storm, as well as those attending the activities in Tampa," the Obama campaign said in a statement.

But Biden is still scheduled to visit two cities further north in the battleground state of Florida -- Orlando and St. Augustine -- on Tuesday, though that trip remains "subject to change due to weather-related precautions."

At the Republican event, which runs Monday to Thursday, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan will be formally named candidates for the November 6 presidential election.

Obama and Biden will be confirmed as the Democratic candidates at their party's convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, from September 3 to 6.

Tropical Storm Isaac was roaring toward impoverished Haiti, where it was set to make landfall later Friday. Although its trajectory is still disorganized, it could near the Florida coast, including Tampa.

People with Parkinson's disease performed markedly better on a test of working memory after a night's sleep, and sleep disorders can interfere with that benefit, researchers have shown. While the classic symptoms of Parkinson's disease include tremors and slow movements, Parkinson's can also affect someone's memory, including "working memory." Working memory is defined as the ability to temporarily store and manipulate information, rather than simply repeat it. The use of working memory is important in planning, problem solving and independent living...

Secondhand shopping is a way of life for many

By Martin Wolk, TODAY

TODAY guest Katy Wolk-Stanley stuck a chord with her first-person account of how she has gone five years without buying any new consumer goods, other than underwear or socks.

Many readers say they shop secondhand stores by necessity, not because of a lifestyle choice. Typical was "Blondini," who said:

As a mother of 5 children, now adults rearing their own children, I have shopped yard sales and thrift stores and been given hand-me-down clothes throughout their lives. This was necessity, not a game. I felt that the segment was demeaning to those of us who have had to scrimp and save -- and yes -- even buy used underwear in thrift stores. I'm proud that my children always looked well dressed and have grown up to be intelligent adults with admirable work ethics and a true knowledge of the value of a dollar.

Others just prefer to live a more non-materialistic lifestyle. As "one-non-conformist" put it:

My husband and I have been doing this for years! We love CL and eBay. We do consignment and have been on a mission to clean out all of the "stuff" we have accumulated over the years. We have found that in the last few years that thrift stores are being used tremendously more then even 5 years ago. It has become a way of survival for many! Reuse, reuse, reuse!?

Katy Wolk-Stanley thought she could go a month without buying anything new. Five years later, she's continuing her "non-consumer" lifestyle, based on borrowing and buying used.

Watch this space for a follow-up story on other extreme savers.

Senior writer?Allison Linn also struck a nerve with a story about the middle class feeling worse off financially now than they did when the recession began nearly five years ago. More than 30 percent of the 20,000 users who responded to our survey said they feel they have fallen completely out of the middle class.

Contributing writer Dana Macario is in the third week of a 30-day challenge to avoid the grocery store. There have been some bumps in the road. First, she failed to plan ahead and had to buy some food at a grocery store. Then she tried to bake her own bread and made "two wonderful-smelling doorstops." Next week Dana will share what she has learned over the past month.

When President Obama assumed office, I was a manager earning $100,000 a year. After 518 days on unemployment, I am awaiting a call to see if I have been hired for a part-time position which would net me $15 to $18 an hour. I am cautiously optimistic about the GOP convention. It isn't because I believe Republicans can actually create jobs. On the contrary -- I believe governments only build barriers to a strong business environment. Yet I will listen closely to each speaker and absorb the Republican plan regarding how they will stimulate an environment conclusive to hiring, particularly in the small business sector. For me and my family, it's all about one thing -- jobs. less?
