Alabama child hostage standoff continues

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? A gunman holed up in a bunker with a 5-year-old hostage kept law officers at bay Wednesday in an all-night, all-day standoff that began when he killed a school bus driver and dragged the boy away, authorities said.

SWAT teams took up positions around the gunman's rural property and police negotiators tried to win the kindergartener's safe release.

The situation remained unchanged late Wednesday, with negotiations ongoing, Alabama State Trooper Charles Dysart told a news conference. He said no additional information would be released until Thursday morning.

The gunman, identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver, was known around the neighborhood as a menacing figure who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a shotgun.

He had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning to answer charges he shot at his neighbors in a dispute last month over a speed bump.

The standoff along a red dirt road began on Tuesday afternoon, after a gunman boarded a stopped school bus filled with children in the town of Midland City, population 2,300. Sheriff Wally Olson said the man shot the bus driver when he refused to hand over a 5-year-old child. The gunman then took the boy away.

"As far as we know there is no relation at all. He just wanted a child for a hostage situation," said Michael Senn, a pastor who helped comfort the traumatized children after the attack.

Authorities initially said the boy was 6, but state Rep. Steve Clouse, who visited the boy's family, said he does not turn 6 until next week.

The bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was hailed by locals as a hero who gave his life to protect 21 students.

The boy's classmates, their parents and other members of this small Bible Belt community gathered in several churches and held a candlelight vigil in the town square Wednesday evening to pray for Poland and for the boy's safety. Some in the square joined together to sing "Amazing Grace."

Authorities gave no details on the standoff, and it was unclear if Dykes made any demands from his underground bunker, which resembled a tornado shelter.

The sheriff said in a brief statement Wednesday evening that negotiators continued talking to the suspect and "at this time we have no reason to believe that the child has been harmed."

About 50 vehicles from federal, state and local agencies were clustered at the end of a dirt road near where Dykes lived in a small travel trailer. Nearby homes were evacuated after authorities found what was believed to be a bomb on his property.

Clouse, who also has met with authorities, said the bunker had food and electricity, and the youngster was watching TV. He said law enforcement authorities were communicating with the gunman, but he had no details on how.

At one point, authorities lowered medicine into the bunker for the boy after his captor agreed to it, Clouse said. The lawmaker said he did not know what the medicine was for or whether it was urgently needed.

Chris Voss, a former international kidnapping negotiator for the FBI, said negotiators at the scene should remain patient and calm, resisting the urge to force a quick resolution.

"Getting what you want is not the same as getting even," said Voss, whose firm, the Black Swan Group, now consults on high-stakes negotiations. "Flooding the zone will not save lives."

Mike and Patricia Smith, who live across the street from Dykes and whose two children were on the bus when the shooting happened, said their youngsters had a run-in with him about 10 months ago.

"My bulldogs got loose and went over there," Patricia Smith said. "The children went to get them. He threatened to shoot them if they came back."

"He's very paranoid," her husband said. "He goes around in his yard at night with a flashlight and shotgun."

Patricia Smith said her children told her what happened on the bus: Two other children had just been dropped off and the Smith children were next. Dykes stepped onto the bus and grabbed the door so the driver couldn't close it. Dykes told the driver he wanted two boys, 6 to 8 years old, without saying why.

According to Smith, Dykes started down the aisle of the bus and the driver put his arm out to block him. Dykes fired four shots at Poland with a handgun, Smith said.

"He did give his life, saving children," Mike Smith said.

Patricia Smith said her daughter, a high school senior, began corralling the other children and headed for the back of the bus while Dykes and the driver were arguing. Later, Smith's son ran inside his house, telling his mother: "The crazy man across the street shot the bus driver and Mr. Poland won't wake up."

Patricia Smith ran over to the bus and saw the driver slumped over in his seat. Her daughter used another child's cellphone to call 911.

Another neighbor, Ronda Wilbur, said Dykes beat her 120-pound dog with a lead pipe for coming onto his side of the dirt road. The dog died a week later.

"He said his only regret was he didn't beat him to death all the way," Wilbur said. "If a man can kill a dog, and beat it with a lead pipe and brag about it, it's nothing until it's going to be people."

Dykes had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to face a charge of menacing some neighbors as they drove by his house weeks ago. Claudia Davis said he yelled and fired shots at her, her son and her baby grandson over damage Dykes claimed their pickup truck did to a makeshift speed bump in the dirt road. No one was hurt.

"Before this happened, I would see him at several places and he would just stare a hole through me," Davis said. "On Monday I saw him at a laundromat and he seen me when I was getting in my truck, and he just stared and stared and stared at me."

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? Will housing pull us out of ...

Joe Harbert

By Orlando Lee Rodriguez

With US stocks collectively in the midst of their largest Bull Run since 2007, the focus of media attention has been on how far past record highs can the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) and the S&P 500 (INX) go this year.

Friday, the S&P closed above 1500 points for the first time since 2008, its eighth straight positive trading day. The Dow, meanwhile, closed at 13805.98 on Friday, edging closer to its all-time record high of 14164.53, a milestone reached in October of 2007.

But ever so quietly the performance of the Philadelphia Housing Sector Index (HGX), with strong earners like Lennar Corporation and Toll Brothers, have outdone the Dow, the S&P and the NASDAQ combined.

?I have a 12 month hold rating on Toll Brothers,? said Williams Financial Group senior equity research analyst, David Neil Williams. ?They?ve got deep management and land acquisition teams in each of their markets. City Living is a nice add, and it?s very beneficial going down the road, but I feel they have sufficient ability to drive their revenue based just off the single family residential sector.?

Toll Brothers who have been extremely active of late in the New York market acquiring $120 million worth of development sites, have seen their stock prices have risen almost 67 percent in the past year. Share prices of Lennar rose 106 percent in 2012 as the company saw net earnings of $679.1 million or $3.11 per share for 2012. Stock of DR Horton, Inc. rose 57 percent last year.

Since being relatively tied on June 22, 2012, the HGX, an index of 20?home-builders? mortgage companies and materials suppliers; has risen by 53 percent. Since July of 2011 the housing sector index has risen by 76.09 percent. In comparison the S&P has gone up 11.86 percent, the Dow 16.23 percent and the NASDAQ 18.71 percent.

?People are being driven to real estate in search of returns,? said Joe Harbert, president of the eastern region for Colliers International. ?We will see it continue as long as we see volatility in the stock market.?

For 2012 The National Association of Realtors reported a 19.2 percent increase in new single family home sales and is forecasting growth by 42.2 during 2013. That while supply levels have dropped 8.5 percent in December to 1.82 million existing homes, leaving an estimated four and a half month supply available nationwide.
This is the lowest inventory levels have been since May 2005.

?Overall sales are expected to stay on an upward trend,? said Gary Thomas, president of National Association of Realtors in a press release. ?The biggest impact of tight inventory is upward pressure on home prices.?

Just like in New York?s class-A office market, demand is outweighing supply for residential homes nationwide, driving up prices and creating demand for new construction and jobs.

?Housing has taken us out of every recession,? said Michael D. Fascitelli, CEO of Vornado Realty Trust at the YMWREA January luncheon. ?Construction jobs can?t be out-sourced, they have to be done here.?

Builder confidence, according to the National Association of Home Builders, has also risen, now for for eight consecutive months. According to the US Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, 813,400 housing units were authorized in 2012, a 30.3 percent increase over 2011. Housing starts are up 28.1 percent and completions up 11.4 percent for the year equaling more construction jobs.

?More jobs and more income will do more to support housing demand,? said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody?s Analytics. ?Mortgage credit in particular will be more ample. I expect the RMBS market to be up and running again.?

Police: Pa. man stopped for beer after breakout

(AP) ? Police say a western Pennsylvania man stopped at a bar and had a beer minutes after he broke out of a police station holding cell after his arrest on an assault charge.

The Washington County public defender's office on Wednesday declined to comment on the charges filed against 40-year-old Smith Township resident Timothy Bonner.

Police say they were processing Bonner, removed his handcuffs, and placed him in the cell. That's when Bonner allegedly knocked the cell door off its hinges and ran away.

After stopping at a house to borrow shoes, police say Bonner went to Richy's Bar, where a customer tells WPXI-TV (http://bit.ly/T6R6zl ) the suspect acknowledged breaking out of jail and then asked for a beer.

The customer says he bought a beer for Bonner, who didn't get to enjoy it before police arrested him.

Mexico breaks up bizarre sex-slavery cult

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? Mexican officials broke up a bizarre cult that allegedly ran a sex-slavery ring among its followers on the U.S. border, authorities said Tuesday.

The "Defensores de Cristo" or "Defenders of Christ" cult allegedly recruited women to have sex with a Spanish man who claimed he was the reincarnation of Christ. Followers were subjected to forced labor or sexual services, including prostitution, according to a victims' advocacy group that said it filed a complaint more than a year ago about the cult.

Federal police, agents of Mexico's National Immigration Institute and prosecutors raided a house earlier this week near Nuevo Laredo, across the border from Laredo, Texas, and found cult members, including children, living in filthy conditions.

The institute said 14 foreigners were detained in the raid and have been turned over to prosecutors, pending possible charges.

Those detained include six Spaniards, and two people each from Brazil, Bolivia and Venezuela. One person from Argentina and one from Ecuador were also detained. Spain's Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed its citizens were among those arrested.

The institute said 10 Mexicans were also found at the house, mainly women, and are presumably among the victims of the cult.

The Attorney General's Office said the investigation was still under way as to what charges, if any, might apply in the case. Given the binds of sect loyalty that had been built over an estimated three years, prosecutors were still trying to work out which of the detainees may be considered victims, and which were abusers.

The institute said the sect's leaders made members pay "tithes," with money or forced labor.

An official of the immigration institute who was not authorized to be quoted by name said that women were recruited to the sect and then were forced to have sex with sect elders; the official described it as a form of human trafficking that included prostitution.

Spaniard Ignacio Gonzalez de Arriba set up shop in Mexico about three years ago, after a stint in Brazil and other parts of South America, said Myrna Garcia, an activist with the Support Network for Cult Victims who has worked with victims of the Defenders of Christ cult.

He became involved in offering courses on "bio-programming," an esoteric practice that claims to allow practicants to "reprogram" their brains to eliminate pain, suffering and anxiety, according to immigration institute.

Gonzalez de Arriba or other detainees could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. A number listed in an advertisement for the "bio-programming" courses was disconnected.

But according to the Defenders of Christ website, he moved on to claim that he was Jesus Christ reincarnated.

Photos of Gonzalez de Arriba are juxtaposed with a painting of Christ, purportedly showing how the Spaniards eyebrows, nose and mouth are "exactly like" those of Christ.

Garcia said Gonzalez de Arriba "mixed bio-programming, Christian and New Age doctrines and fears about the end of the world ... to control followers, to keep them terrorized."

"He made them believe he was Christ," said Garcia, whose group filed a complaint with Mexican authorities about the cult's abuses about one year ago. "Like Christ, they have to adore him, if not they will lose their souls ... they have to give their lives for him."

"There were women who were forced into prostitution," Garcia noted. "It was a form of human trafficking that was extraordinarily effect from the criminal point of view," she said, because the women were terrified of being separated from the sect.

How the cult managed to thrive in an area of Mexico that is tightly controlled by the violent Zetas drug cartel remains a mystery.

The immigration institute said in a press release that the Defenders of Christ was headed by Venezuelan citizen Jose Arenas Losanger Segovia, but according to Garcia and the cult's website, he was a lieutenant of Gonzalez de Arriba.

The Interior Department said the Defenders of Christ had not registered as a religious group, as required under Mexican law. Garcia said cells of the cult might still be active in Peru and Argentina.

Apollo, Metropoulos near deal for Hostess Twinkies: sources

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private equity firms Apollo Global Management LLC and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co are near a deal to buy snack cake brands including Hostess Twinkies and Donettes, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

A deal for roughly $400 million, part of Hostess Brands Inc's bankruptcy process, could be announced as soon as Tuesday, said one of the sources, who declined to be identified as the discussions are not public.

The so-called stalking horse bid by the private equity firms would serve as the baseline offer for the business, which also includes Dolly Madison bread and Hostess cupcakes. It could still be topped by others at an auction.

Dean Metropoulos, No. 360 on the Forbes 400 list of America's wealthiest people, is a packaged foods veteran who was once the joint owner of brands such as Duncan Hines baking mixes, Vlasic pickles and Swanson frozen dinners. In 2010, his firm bought Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, the no-frills brew popular with young East Coast hipsters.

His son Daren, a principal at the firm, confirmed earlier this month that they were working on a bid. Neither Daren, nor a spokesman for Apollo were immediately available to comment on Tuesday. Hostess declined to comment.

Apollo, founded by banker Leon Black, has invested in consumer companies before, including in CKE Restaurants and Claire's Stores Inc.

Hostess was granted permission by a U.S. bankruptcy court judge in November to wind down its business and liquidate its assets after a strike by a baker's union crippled the 82-year-old company's operations.

The sale of assets, which range from Twinkies and Wonder bread to real estate and baking equipment, is being run by Perella Weinberg Partners. The lead banker on the sale, Joshua Scherer, has said there was great interest from many parties in the assets.

Earlier this month, Hostess chose a $390 million offer by Flowers Foods, maker of Tastykake products, as the stalking horse bid for several brands including Wonder bread.

On Monday, Hostess said it chose McKee Foods Corp, maker of Little Debbie snack cakes, as the initial bidder for its Drake's cakes, which include Ring Dings, Yodels and Devil Dogs. It also chose United States Bakery as the lead bidder for four of its smaller bread brands plus bakeries, equipment and depots.

Hostess also filed a motion on Monday to stop paying retiree benefits to its former employees, saying that its lenders only agreed to fund the benefits through February 2013 due to a delay in the appointment of a retiree committee.

NIH Told to Retire Most Research Chimps

About half of 21 ongoing biomedical and behavioral experiments would be ended, under advice from a working group of external agency advisors

Chimp at Africa Alive, Suffolk, England Most research chimpanzees would be retired under new recommendations. Image: Flickr/timparkinson

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) should dismantle a decades-old colony of 360 chimpanzees, retiring all but roughly 50 of the animals to a national sanctuary, the biomedical agency was told on 22 January in a long-awaited report.

The report, from a working group of external agency advisors, also counsels the NIH to end about half of 21 existing biomedical and behavioral experiments, saying they do not meet criteria established in a December, 2011 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report.

?Clearly there is going to be a reduction in the use of chimpanzees in research,? says working group co-chair Kent Lloyd, the associate dean for research at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis.

The report says that the NIH should begin planning sanctuary housing for the retiring animals ?immediately?, and that a colony of about 50 animals would be sufficient for future research. The report also sets high hurdles for new chimpanzee experiments in the future, calling for the establishment of an independent committee that would vet individual study proposals after they first pass routine NIH scientific review. In cases where the burden on the animals is high, the benefit to humanity should have to be ?very high? to pass muster with the committee, says Daniel Geschwind, the other co-chair of the working group and a geneticist at the School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The report suggests that three of nine ongoing invasive experiments, involving immunology and infectious diseases, could continue, because they meet the IOM criteria. These require that a study be needed for public health; that no alternative animal model exists; that performing the study in humans would be unethical; and that the animals be maintained in socially and physically appropriate habitats. The report also says that eight of 13 behavioral or comparative genomics studies could be allowed to continue, but in some cases only conditionally ? meaning that funding for these experiments could not be renewed without passing the independent committee review.

The working group ? a subgroup of NIH?s Council of Councils, a trans-agency advisory body ? was chartered by NIH director Francis Collins one year ago to advise the agency on how to implement the recommendations of the IOM report, which found that most chimpanzee research was not necessary. Its recommendations are not binding; Collins is expected to respond to them in late March, after a 60-day period of public comment. But they signal yet another significant step in an ongoing retrenchment. Last month, the agency announced that it will retire 110 chimpanzees to the national Chimp Haven sanctuary in Keithville, Louisiana, after they had been first slated to move to an active NIH-supported research centre in San Antonio, Texas.

Today?s recommendations speak to the fate of an additional 360 research-eligible chimpanzees that are owned by the biomedical agency and housed at facilities in Texas and New Mexico. The fate of an additional 91 animals that the NIH pays to maintain, but does not own, was not clear; the agency cannot compel the retirement of these animals, housed at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (TBRI) in San Antonio.

Sequim Land for Sale with Mountain View - Sequim Real Estate in ...

A Message From Chuck Marunde

"We contacted Chuck about six months ago to help find a retirement property in Sequim. We had visited Sequim several weeks before and decided that this was the place for us to retire. We liked the friendly people and the natural beauty of the area. We had been looking for some time in other parts of the country - California, Oregon, North Carolina, and Vermont. In most of these other areas, we found real estate agents that were knowledgeable but did not follow up with us to continue narrowing down real estate possibilities. Once we were out of earshot, communications would stop. That is one of the reasons we were interested in working with Chuck. Besides having great knowledge of both the local real estate market and of law, his testimonials on the internet indicated a willingness to actively communicate with his clients. Chuck demonstrated this immediately. Even before we met, he responded very quickly and helpfully to any email question. After arriving for a second visit to Sequim in September, we finally met Chuck face to face. He was friendly, encouraging, and readily shared good practical information. We worked with him on a number of candidate properties - including an offer on a property while visiting that week. Although we could not come to terms with the owners on the final property price, we look forward to continuing to work closely with Chuck. He is an invaluable resource to help us identify and purchase the retirement property that's right for us." Paul and Ginny

"As an out of state buyer unfamiliar with the area, it was important to me not only to have a real estate agent who knew the area well, but also one who knew the value of the properties. I chose Chuck because he is also a real estate lawyer and it is reassuring to have that extra degree working for you. I selected the houses I was interested in on line before taking a two day trip to Sequim to look at them in person. I sent my list to Chuck, who gave me feedback, then organized our tour so we could see 16 properties in a short time. He was very accommodating, driving me all over Sequim, and rescheduling appointments when we fell behind on our time. On day two, I found my home and we drafted an offer on it that evening. By the time I arrived back home on the plane the next evening, my offer had been accepted. Chuck was honest about what it would take to get me into my new home, while having my back the entire transaction. Since I was unable to relocate immediately after closing, he and his assistant Ade, have been taking care of many additional responsibilities for me. He was a pleasure to work with." Chris

My husband and I went to Sequim intending to interview several Realtors to find one to help us locate and buy a home in Sequim. We knew we wanted someone we could trust and who would have our best interests in mind. Since we would be handling the transaction from S. California this was very important to us. We met Chuck and looked no further. We felt a connection right away and spent some time looking at homes together so Chuck could get a feel for what we wanted. Well, we left Sequim having made an offer on a home which the owner accepted. Chuck has helped us through the purchase process. We are positive it would not have gone so smoothly without his help. We give him 4 thumbs up. Cathie and Wally

My husband and I were interested in relocating from Georgia to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, and while we were staying at an Inn in Port Angeles, Washington, the Innkeepers gave us the name of Chuck Marunde as a contact for helping us with our real estate needs. Upon meeting Chuck we hit it off and immediately became friends and felt a real sense of trust in Chuck handling our wants and needs as far as real estate goes. We gave him, for lack of a better word, "unrealistic" demands in this unstable economy, and by the next morning Chuck had a list of properties that would fit those "demands". Chuck was able to help us not only find a home and property that suited our needs as a large family, but he went above and beyond what he needed to do to ensure that our offer was presented (and accepted) in a timely fashion. In the past 25 years of dealing in real estate, Chuck is, without a doubt, the most prompt, reliable, trustworthy, and friendly professional we have ever done business with! We will always use Chuck from here on out for all our real estate needs. Larry and April Leach Sequim, Washington

"Selling a house remotely is not an easy task especially in this market. But Chuck sold our house and made the transaction effortless. The people that he found were perfect, too, and that makes us very happy. Now the weight of having to sell our house is off our shoulders and we can finally feel settled and enjoy our new location. Chuck is our HERO!" Phil and Janet

Andy Romano is a successful motion picture character actor with over 40 years in "the Biz." Mr. Romano has a home in beautiful Santa Barbara, California, but he chooses to live most of the time here in Sequim, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula in the great Pacific Northwest. Why? In his own words, "Because it's even more beautiful and surrounded by more beauty in this incredibly peaceful and quiet place. With respect to real estate agents or brokers, well my friend Chuck Marunde, owner of Sequim and Port Angeles Real Estate, is hands down the best there is." Andy Romano

"I?ve known Chuck Marunde for several years. My wife and I bought and sold one house through his services, and now have another listed through him for sale. Whether Chuck was representing us as the buyer or seller, I am confident he always had our best interests at heart. He helped us set or negotiate a reasonable price, and made sure there was a clear and open line of communication. He responded rapidly to email and phone calls and always knew the best person to contact for the various services involved in a transaction. I have worked with quite a few real estate agents and Chuck is right at the top of my list of good ones. Actually, Chuck is first and foremost just a good person, and he carries his personal honesty and integrity over into his profession. He has the greatest depth of experience in real estate of any agent or broker I have known. His years of practicing real estate law prior to becoming a broker are evident in the meticulous care he takes with the process and documentation. I am impressed by the way Chuck has integrated internet services into his real estate business. He probably knows more about this process than any other realtor in the country. In this tight market it is important to use every possible means to spread the word about available properties?to reach the few people who might be interested in a particular property." Steve L.

?When Chuck told me I not only got a Realtor with decades of experience, but I also got his knowledge and experience as a real estate attorney for 20 years totally free, I couldn?t believe it. But it was true, and I strongly recommend Chuck to anyone dealing with real estate.? Susan

"We contacted Chuck to be our buyer?s agent for our purchase of a home in the Sequim area. Throughout the entire process he was enjoyable to work with, and we found him to be exceptionally knowledgeable, thorough and diligent on our behalf. He was in constant contact and always readily available and responsive by phone and email. We were buying from out of state and unable to cover the various steps in the process, so we really appreciated Chuck?s willingness to personally handle what we needed to have done. He coordinated and attended the various inspections, followed up on our numerous questions and requests relating to the sale (including measuring rooms and sending photos), and even conducted the final walk through of the property for us. We particularly valued his advice on a number of different issues that arose ? and that he handled for us ? during the transaction. In short, we were very impressed with Chuck and would recommend him highly to anyone who is considering purchasing (or selling) in the Sequim area." Ed and Sharlene

?Chuck Marunde?s level of expertise in real estate investment is amazing. His knowledge, experience and legal training have given me a dramatic advantage in real estate investing. He works hard to stay on the cutting edge of real estate marketing, sound advice and value-added service for his clients.? Kirk Wald, Financial Planner

"Our experience in working with Chuck Marunde was very enjoyable, he is a knowledgeable, dedicated professional who knows the real estate market extremely well. The thing we like most about Chuck is that he is a realist, he is very well versed in what is going on in the current volatile market and he understands "true value" in the market. Chuck is a honest and loyal leader in his field who really goes the extra mile to please the customer at every level. Having the legal background is a real bonus when it comes to negotiating a real estate transaction, Chuck is the guy you want in your corner when you come to the buying table." Sara and Ken

"We are ex-Washington residents who currently live in Arizona. We had been searching the Puget Sound area four years for a waterfront property to build a retirement home when we first contacted Chuck Marunde through his website. We had made multiple trips to various areas but most of the Realtors we contacted simply sent us an email, provided no follow up and did next to nothing to help us locate a property. On our first trip to Port Angeles, after connecting with Chuck, we purchased our dream property. We now own a high bank waterfront lot overlooking the Straight of Jaun de Fuca, and are excited to become part of the Peninsula community." Paul and Linda

"Chuck, I visit your site just about every day to see what is going on in Sequim. Although I have never been there, it is on my short list for a retirement home in 2014, when I turn 66. (Save me a house!). I do hope you are still in business then so you can help me find a little house for me and my cats with a view of some water. :-)" Ruth

Over a year ago, during a visit to the Olympic Game Farm, we developed what we eventually called the ?Sequim Syndrome.? We live in New Mexico and decided Sequim was where we wanted to live in retirement. On our second visit to Sequim, we met with Chuck and asked him to help us. Chuck's web site provides such amazing search capabilities. Chuck's site also contains a 1000 blog postings and a real estate video series detailing buying real estate in Sequim. We bought Chuck's book about Sequim real estate and set out to follow his advice carrying on an ongoing email and phone conversation with Chuck. Doing our due diligence ?Marunde style? and using his MLS search site, we came up with about 50 homes that met our needs. We narrowed the list down to 15 properties that best met our needs. We came back to Sequim a third time with our list in hand, and Chuck spent two days with us showing us all the homes on our list. Not only did Chuck help us find that dream home, he spent time to educate us about the quality of construction, fair market values of various properties, home layouts, and the joys of Sequim living. We had a great time as we traveled from house to house. By mid afternoon of the second day, my wife said we had found ?the house.? Chuck helped us draft our offer and sent our offer to the seller's agent. It turned out there was a second offer made on the property at the same time. Chuck's help to make a clean offer paid off. At breakfast two days later, we got a call from Chuck saying our offer had been accepted by the sellers. We are now back home in New Mexico. Chuck attends every inspection on our behalf, updating us at every turn by email and phone. Our dream home is becoming a reality because of Chuck and because we were smart enough to follow his advice. We absolutely would NOT have been able to do this without Chuck Marunde's expertise and enthusiasm. We recommend Chuck to everyone planning a move to Sequim, Port Angeles, or anywhere on the Olympic Peninsula. Chuck is a gold mine of information and expertise for home buyers everywhere, not just on the Olympic Peninsula. Larry and Shirley

During the months of February and March 2012, Chuck showed my wife and I over two dozen homes from Port Angeles to Port Townsend. We found Chuck to be very helpful, friendly and courteous. With Chuck there is no pressure; It is all about finding the best home for the buyer. As a Buyer's Agent, Chuck will give you his honest opinion of a property, including a fair market price. In one instance Chuck wrote up an offer for us which was accepted. Chuck was very helpful arranging for home and well inspections which involved multiple trips to the property. Unfortunately, escrow failed to close when, during the home inspection process, it was determined that a septic system repair was needed which the seller was unwilling/unable to make. We will continue to work with Chuck as there is no better Buyer's Agent on the North Olympic Peninsula. Bert and Sally

Groupon pulls gun deals from site

In the weeks since one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history at Sandy Hook Elementary, another company is facing pressure and rethinking its approach on guns.

Groupon is reevaluating its gun policies after removing all existing and upcoming deals on guns, shooting ranges and other gun-related offers. The popular online coupon site made the decision following the Newtown, Conn., school massacre where a gunman opened fire killing 20 children and six adults in December.

"Groupon has been testing firearm-related deals like shooting ranges and concealed weapons courses for the last eight months," said Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler in a statement. "Based on performance and customer feedback, it's clear they're not a fit right now."

Groupon told Chicago Tribune it has "canceled existing and planned discounts for shooting ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting."

That is exactly what happened to Michael Cargill, owner of Central Texas Gun Works in Austin, who partnered with Groupon to offer a two-for-one concealed handgun licensed course discounted at $69. The regular course fee is $140. The deal was scheduled to run for a week starting on Jan. 15 but was cancelled after a Groupon representative broke the news to Cargill just days later.

"I was furious," said Cargill. "My customers could not sign up for the deal. They called requesting that deal and then they were told by Groupon they could not purchase the deal because Groupon said they weren't doing anymore gun deals at all."

Cargill is now calling on his "Second Amendment family" for an all-out boycott of the popular online deals website. He shared the boycott announcement through social media and also distributed a statement to "members in the gun community."

"I'm calling on every American who believes in the right of safe, lawful gun ownership to join me in refusing to hand over even one red cent to an organization who has no respect for recreational or personal protection who choose to exercise their constitutional right," he said.

Groupon has not contacted Cargill following the boycott announcement. Cargill has not decided whether to seek legal action against Groupon.

Since its launch in 2008, Groupon has become a popular deal curator among tourists and big city natives alike for offers, bargain deals and according to its website, "the best stuff to eat, see, do and buy." Groupon is available in 48 countries worldwide.

Paul Flynn, British Politician, Wants Gay Royals To Have Equal Rights To The Throne

If Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have a gay son or daughter, that child may have equal rights to the throne -- that is, if one British politician's clause to the royal succession law is approved.

Members of Parliament (MPs) are in the process of debating the succession to the royal crown, namely the addition of an amendment that would protect the right of Kate and William's possible daughter to her position in line to the throne. But Paul Flynn, of the British Labour Party, wants to push the debate one step further by adding an amendment that would protect the rights of a gay child.

Via Flynn's personal blog:

One of the new clauses I am proposing is to future proof the monarchy from charges of discrimination by giving same-sex partnerships the same validity as heterosexual ones in the rights of succession. I am not optimistic that my amendments will be called but I and a few others will be ready to contribute.

James Park, a reporter for U.K. LGBT blog Pink News, explains:

If accepted, the change to the law could lea[d] to the reign of an openly gay or lesbian king or queen and for their same-sex partner to be recognised as consort. Any children born to the couple through artificial insemination or surrogacy would succeed to the throne so long as the couple are in a same-sex marriage or civil partnership.

The amendment regarding same-sex royals would need the approval of John Bercow, the speaker of the House of Commons, in order to move on to full debate, Boston.com notes. Bercow has been a proponent of LGBT rights and is the honorary president of the Kaleidoscope Trust, an LGBT rights group that promotes diversity and freedom from unlawful discrimination.

The Royal Succession Bill received its first reading on Tuesday. A number of MPs fought for the removal of all discrimination from the royal succession rule, according to the Telegraph, but some still believe changing the law could prove to be a "Pandora's box," the Telegraph notes.

Emergency room redux for many patients after hospitalization

Jan. 22, 2013 ? After a hospitalization, patients face many challenges as they transition home. A new study of this vulnerable period published by Yale School of Medicine researchers in JAMA found that a substantial number of patients return to the emergency department soon after leaving the hospital, and, while such patients are not usually readmitted, the study raises concerns that many more patients require acute medical care after hospital discharge than previously recognized.

A hospital's readmission rate is a marker of hospital quality of care and the success of patient transitions to outpatient care. However, hospital readmission rates may not tell the whole story.

"It's frustrating to see people ending up back in the emergency room so soon after leaving the hospital," said the study's lead author Dr. Anita Vashi, a Robert Wood Johnson clinical scholar at Yale. "It makes me wonder about the cause. Are we not educating them well enough about how to safely transition home? Or do we not have capacity in the system for their care team to coordinate follow-up care if they have a complication? Either way, care that is fragmented in this manner can lead to conflicting recommendations, medication errors, distress, and higher costs."

Vashi and her team studied over five million patients who were discharged from acute care hospitals across three states -- California, Florida, and Nebraska -- in 2008-2009. Nearly 18% of hospitalized patients returned to either the emergency room or were readmitted within 30 days following discharge. Medicare beneficiaries had even higher rates. Visits to the emergency room, which are not currently measured by hospital readmission rates, accounted for nearly 40% of all visits back to the hospital within 30 days after discharge.

"The big question is how many of these emergency room visits could have been avoided by tightening up our healthcare system, and ensuring close collaboration and communication between patients and their health providers inside and outside the hospital," said senior author Dr. Cary Gross, associate professor of internal medicine at Yale School of Medicine and director of the Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) center at Yale. "Future work should focus on identifying how to decrease the need for patients to seek emergency room care right after they leave the hospital."

Conditions with the highest emergency room rates were related to mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, and prostate issues. "High and varying rates of emergency room utilization suggest there is potential to improve care coordination and acute care delivery," said Vashi. "If we don't expand our view of post-acute care from readmissions to include emergency room visits, we will severely underestimate patient needs and system resources required to care tor them."

Other study authors include Dr. Justin P. Fox, Dr. Brendan G. Carr, Dr. Gail D'Onofrio, Dr. Jesse M. Pines, and Dr. Joseph S. Ross.

The study was supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; the National Institute on Aging (Ross); the American Federation for Aging Research through the Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award Program (Ross); and a career development award to Carr K08 AG032886 from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Retina, resolution, high definition ? what does it all mean for web ...

blog_main

Around mid 2012 ?Apple launched its first line of MacBook Pro laptops?with retina displays. To most people that did not mean much. With a small market share, only those at the bleeding edge realised that their web-world was about to become both incredibly sharp and intolerably blurry at the same time.

Retina displays ? Apple?s catch-cry for its ultra high definition screens are not revolutionary, but it?s the way they brought them to the masses via a computer screen that was double the resolution of anything else on the market. With twice the pixels in width and height, the end result was a screen with effectively 4 times the pixel detail.

Sounds like gobbledygook and does it really matter? Well unless you are one of the early adopters, it probably won?t affect you? for now that is!

However new technology has a funny way of becoming the norm and before long we?ll all likely be surfing the web on super high-resolution screens as other manufacturers get on board and the viewing landscape changes. Anyone publishing anything online will need to adapt for this increased resolution.

What does it mean to me?

If you are a photographer or someone who enjoys viewing high-quality images? ? the increased resolution means that your photos appear sharper and clearer than ever before. Pixels are practically invisible even with your nose pressed up against the screen. High definition movies pop out of the screen. It makes for amazing clarity.

This applies equally to the written word. Text documents never looked this good! Text is so sharp and clear that when you get used to looking at this screen you will think that your old device was something made back in the dark ages. It is that crisp.

With increased resolution comes increased clarity, meaning poorer quality (read low-resolution) images look a whole lot worse. Images that you once thought were sharp can look soft and fuzzy on a retina display.

And there?s this great big thing called the internet which is brimming full of low-resolution images. Point this new monitor at any typical web-page and your eyes might start to hurt. Images and graphics look out of focus because most all were created for the old 72ppi (pixels per inch) standard whilst your shiny new retina screen is running at 220ppi.

Web developer nightmare

As a designer I am incredibly mindful of quality and precision. Up until now I?ve been designing for the average pixel resolution and the world has been clear and rosy. Enter the retina display and suddenly my crisp world has been turned upside down.

So why don?t we just create higher-res images to suit? Well for starters increasing an image in resolution means increasing its file-size. With the average user having practically zero patience online ? we all want things to appear in a few short seconds ? an increase in file size is going to hit website conversion rates as the average file weight of a web page needs to increase, thus the time to load? and our patience is tested.

I?m happy to wait a few more seconds so that I can experience a better quality image, but the average user probably wont have that patience especially if the vast majority are surfing the web on lower resolution devices that won?t benefit from an increased quality image.

So perhaps websites could show two different types of images -? a low-resolution image for the typical monitor and a higher resolution for retina users.

But this ads another step in a busy web-development schedule and potentially increases costs in web-development as all graphics/images/ logos have to be produced in two different sizes. Maintenance of said website can become painful especially with many businesses using Content Management Systems?and uploading their own images, possibly from non-retina devices that cannot tell the difference.?

What should online publishers do?

Some clever developers are ?modifying web code??to change image quality at either the server level or on the fly at the browser via all manner of code hacks.

Others are introducing apps and plugins such as WordPress?s WP Retina 2x?that perform? image resolution change based on your server environment.

And the majority are probably making a deliberate choice to keep images as they are until the rest of the industry plays catch-up and a new image resolution becomes standard.

When this tipping point will occur is anyone?s guess, but it would be prudent to consider what if any changes are needed to be done to your own website in light of Apple?s push into high-definition web surfing.

911 center: GPS users don't always know locations

Smartphone with GPS navigation

FRISCO, Colo. (AP) -- Summit County emergency dispatchers say it sometimes takes longer to get help to people who rely on GPS-equipped smartphones because they don't know exactly where they are.

The Summit Daily News reported Sunday (http://tinyurl.com/ajraarc) that some people who call 911 can't give their precise location even in towns or on major highways.

Officials say GPS-enabled phones can find a caller's location to within about 90 to 110 yards.

Lisa Hans, a supervisor with the county communications department, says that's good in the backcountry but not in a populated area.

Hans says it's particularly hard to pinpoint the location of someone who calls 911 from Interstate 70, which passes through Summit County. She says sometimes callers can say only that they're west of Denver or tell dispatchers where they're headed.

President Obama, first lady walk the walk

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama walk down a portion of Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., during Monday's inaugural parade.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

?

President Barack Obama walked the walk Monday, hopping out of his limousine to hoof it down Pennsylvania Ave. with the first lady during the inaugural parade, to the delight of crowds who waited hours in the cold for a chance to see history in the remaking.

His second-in-command stole at least part of the show, though.

The Obamas didn?t press much flesh, waving and smiling from a presidential distance. But Vice President Joe Biden worked the crowd like he was stopping by the county fair, racing from one side of the road to the other to shake hands and hug kids.

When NBC?s Al Roker shouted out a question, asking Obama how the day was going, he got an answer: ?It?s going great!? Biden did him one better, dashing over to pump Roker?s hand.

The voluble veep gesticulated wildly at spectators, whipping them into even more of a frenzy ? quite a feat considering the ear-splitting cheers that followed the president and Michelle Obama as they made their way from the Capitol to the White House.

They began the journey ? one that presidents have made since Thomas Jefferson ? in a black Cadillac that left from the foot of the Capitol.

Cries of ?O-bama! O-bama!? swept down the avenue in waves as the limo made its slow crawl along the street, its flags fluttering in the wind, Secret Service agents walking briskly on the flanks.

Crowds were substantially smaller than four years ago; no official estimate was given out, but half a million people used the Metro to get to the route.

Still, they stood five-deep or more, bundled against the 40-degree weather, holding cameras over barricades for a picture of the first couple looking out the limo?s tinted windows.

?It was beautiful,? Tara Lucas, 38, an administrative assistant from Pearland, Texas, told the Associated Press. ?All I saw was a face in a window and it was remarkable.?

?You felt the love,? added her friend, Connie Griffin, 41.

About halfway down the route, the presidential vehicle stopped, the doors opened and the Obamas got out. Hand in hand, they walked for more than a block, following the blue line that is painted on the asphalt every four years.

Then they got back in the limo, only to emerge again closer to the White House. Michelle Obama blew kisses at the stands. Her husband, a smile plastered across his face, gave his constituents the thumbs up, every gesture greeted with more applause.

People in Obama hats and buttons ? and at least one woman in an Obama beach blanket -- yelled to them from the sidelines. Wide-eyed children danced and flung their hands out, hoping for a chance to touch the newly sworn commander-in-chief.

People had flocked to the route before sunrise to ensure a good view of the president and the pageantry -- from a red-coated fife-and-drum marching, to kids on 6-foot unicycles who joined floats from across the country, to NASA?s famous mohawk-topped flight controller Bobak Ferdowski on a float with a model of the Mars Curiosity rover.

Some were showing their support for Obama, others just enjoying the spectacle and symbolism.

Vicki Lyons, 51, of Lakewood, Colo., told the AP she was "mostly Republican," but attending the inauguration was "like standing in the middle of history."

"No matter who the president is, everybody needs to do this at least once," she said.

Moments after speaking with President Obama, NBC's Al Roker gets an impromptu handshake from Vice President Biden along the inaugural parade route.

Chasing Balance in Motherhood | Attachment Matters

Balance, as in balance between family and personal time, is an elusive component in parenthood. I, as well as any mother I know, have been chasing the perfect balance since my first trimester of my first pregnancy. I have learned many lessons through the years on how to balance parenthood, career, marriage, and me time. But still, it seems that any formula for balance that I find only works for a few weeks before something ? illness, car needs repair, a giant work project, and so on ? forces me to throw all up in the air again and re-organize.

I am a stay-at-home mom, for the most part. I work from home, and when I do go elsewhere to work, I am fortunate to be able to bring my youngest child with me while the other two are in school. Another of the principles of Attachment Parenting asks parents to ensure that their child is receiving consistent and loving care with a single caregiver for the first two or three years of life. For some parents, this caregiver is a parent; for others, the caregiver is a childcare provider. I choose to piece together multiple jobs and freelance work that allows me to remain with my children, although be assured work-outside-the-home mothers that working from home is not that glamorous and has its own set of challenges: In some ways, it?s nice to be able to skip the commute and work in my pajamas, but then again, when work is also home, it takes a bit more effort to tuck me time in the day.

The grass is always greener on the other side? I think this saying is fitting in any part of life, including mothers? stay-at-home versus work-outside-the-home decision. It?s human nature to never be quite satisfied with our circumstances. It?s both a curse and blessing; fulfillment can be fleeting, but it also pushes us to improve our situation. That constant push and pull between career and family life ? because both are very fulfilling in themselves ? can take its toll on women.

That?s what I read between the lines of this summary of ForbesWoman and TheBump.com?s ?Parenthood and Economy 2012? Survey. Basically, the survey shows that whether mothers stay at home or work outside the home, they?re not content with their role: Stay-at-home moms feel as if they?re not fully contributing to their family?s financial position or resentment for giving up a career, and working mothers miss their kids and feel resentment that their partners don?t make enough money to allow them the choice to stay at home. Both groups say, the recession is to blame.

This restlessness among mothers isn?t going away, and not just because the nation?s economy is still recovering. Much of how mothers view their lives results from our unique hormones: We?re programmed to want to spend as much time with our children as possible, and yet we definitely need balance; we also get a lot of satisfaction from our careers. We?re complex creatures. Fathers, for the most part, won?t feel quite the pull that women do between children and career because they just don?t have the same chemical makeup. Certainly, the recession contributes but the core of the problem isn?t money ? it?s that continual, constant, never-ending search for balance and peace.

The survey results came to one alarming conclusion: Mothers, no matter their stay-at-home or working status, are unhappy. They are not balanced. They feel guilty when working but they crave me time when with their children. What?s the solution here? I?m not sure, but it probably has something to do with learning how to be more content with your choices and making informed decisions. At least that?s what helps me.

Regardless, balance is vital when it comes to parenting. Attachment Parenting, especially, demands that parents give so much of their attention and energy and presence to their children. And this can only be done if a parent feels balanced. So, whether you?re a working mother or a stay-at-home mom, it?s important that you feel peace and fulfillment. This often means making a change ? sometimes a major life change like a new job, or perhaps just carving out a little more me time, cutting out an activity in your life that seems more headache than not, playing with your children a little more, sitting down for a family meal, slowing down and reconnecting with yourself, your spouse, your children.

Health News - Protein essential for healthy eyes described by ...

Researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in collaboration with researchers at the Salk Institute in California, have found for the first time that a specific protein is essential not only for maintaining a healthy retina in the eye, but also may have implications for understanding and possibly treating other conditions in the immune, reproductive, vascular and nervous systems, as well as in various cancers.

Dr. Tal Burstyn-Cohen of the Hebrew University Institute of Dental Sciences

Dr. Tal Burstyn-Cohen of the Hebrew University Institute of Dental Sciences

Their work, reported online in the journal Neuron, highlights the role of Protein S in the maintenance of a healthy retina through its involvement in the process of pruning photoreceptors, the light-sensitive neurons in the eye. (This process is also referred to as phagocytosis.) These photoreceptors keep growing and elongating from their inner end. In order to maintain a constant length, they must be pruned from their outer end by specialized cells called retinal pigment epithelial cells.

Without such pruning -- which also clears away many free radicals and toxic by-products generated during visual biochemical reactions -- photoreceptors would succumb to toxicity and degenerate, leading if unchecked to blindness. A receptor molecule called Mer is a key in photoreceptor pruning, and is therefore vital for retinal health. Mutations in the mouse, rat and human Mer genes cause retinal degeneration, which finally leads to blindness.

The Hebrew University study published in Neuron focuses on the molecules activating Mer in this pruning mechanism. Although two such molecules ? Gas6 and Protein S -- were identified previously, it was yet to be proven that they also play a role in a living organism. To show this, Dr. Tal Burstyn-Cohen of the Hebrew University Institute of Dental Sciences and colleagues at the Salk Institute in California found in their experiments on laboratory animals that both Gas6 and Protein S are needed to activate phagocytosis, or pruning, of retinal photoreceptors, and thus keep a healthy retina.

These findings could have practical implications, since Protein S also functions as a potent blood anticoagulant. People with Protein S deficiency are at risk for life threatening thrombosis (blood clots) and thromboembolism (a clot that breaks loose and is carried by the blood stream to plug another vessel).

These results further open new avenues of research into the role of Protein S in activating the receptors in other tissues where their function was shown to be important, such as in the immune, reproductive, vascular and nervous systems, as well as in various cancers where activation of receptors has been observed. For example, since Protein S is important for blood vessel formation, neutralizing Protein S in the blood vessels supplying blood to cancer growths could interfere with the cancerous blood supply.

This project was initiated during Dr. Burstyn-Cohen?s postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute in California, and continued as a collaborative work from her newly established lab at the Hebrew University Institute of Dental Sciences.

Egypt police, protesters clash over uprising court case

CAIRO (Reuters) - Police and protesters clashed in the port city of Alexandria on Sunday after a judge investigating the killing of protesters in Egypt's 2011 uprising said he was transferring the case to another court, a court source and a Reuters witness said.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs wanted the court to consider the report of a fact-finding committee investigating the case against six police officers accused of killing unarmed protesters during the 18-day uprising before proceeding with the defendants' hearings.

Tensions are rising ahead of the second anniversary of the 2011 uprising due on January 25, the date of the first day of the demonstrations, which is expected to trigger protests against new President Mohamed Mursi and his Islamist allies.

After a heated argument with the lawyers, the Alexandria Criminal Court judge adjourned the session and said he was transferring the case to the city's appeals court.

Families watching the proceedings on court television in an adjacent hall erupted in anger and fought with police, who beat them back with batons, the witness said.

"The people want to bring down the regime" and "the people want to cleanse the judiciary," the protesters chanted.

Clashes continued outside the courtroom after the police drove them out.

Police fired tear gas and one police car was shown in video footage ramming into a protester in a scene reminiscent of the violent clashes in 2011.

Two police cars were set on fire, the witness said. Security forces detained some protesters, the state news agency MENA said, and dozens of people were injured.

"The interior ministry has not changed. They are thugs!" chanted the protesters outside the court.

Unidentified assailants raided the court after the clashes and set fire to legal papers and documents inside, MENA said.

After years of upheaval, many Egyptians - from the capital Cairo to smaller towns across the country - feel that discontent could again explode into a new wave of unrest.

The economy has been in tatters since the revolt and many say they have yet to see justice dispensed for the deaths of friends and relatives during the uprising as well as the 16-month rule of the army between the ouster of former leader Hosni Mubarak and the election of Mursi.

Frustration with Mursi is rising, with many saying that nothing has changed since he was elected in last June. Disagreements over a new national constitution late last year triggered violent protests, further eroding trust in his government.

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- A Kansas State University-led study has uncovered new information that helps scientists better understand the complex workings of cells in the innate immune system. The findings may also lead to new avenues in disease control and prevention.

Philip Hardwidge, associate professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology, was the study's principal investigator. He and colleagues looked at the relationship between a bacterial protein and the innate immune system -- a system of defensive cells that responds rapidly to an infection in a nonspecific manner.

Among their findings, the researchers characterized a new protein that affects how cells in the innate immune system function and protect humans against invading bacteria such as E. coli O157:H7. The study, "NleB, a Bacterial Effector with Glycosyltransferase Activity, Targets GAPDH Function to Inhibit NF-kappaB Activation," was published in the most recent issue of the scientific journal Cell Host and Microbe. The National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded the study.

Hardwidge conducted the study with lead author Xiaofei Gao, a doctoral student at the University of Kansas Medical Center and now employed as a postdoctoral fellow at the Whitehead Institute; and with Thanh Pham and Leigh Ann Feuerbacher, postdoctoral research fellows in diagnostic medicine and pathobiology at Kansas State University. Colleagues at the University of Kansas Medical Center; the Institute of Infectiology in Muenster, Germany; and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research also contributed to the study.

The research team studied a bacterium that infects mice, named Citrobacter rodentium. The bacterium is similar to E. coli O157:H7, which causes diarrheal illness in humans. Both bacteria use the protein NleB to inhibit the innate immune system from fighting the bacteria.

"NleB is very important to the ability to cause disease," Hardwidge said. "Epidemiological and functional studies on E. coli and C. rodentium have shown that the presence of the NleB protein is associated with the ability of E. coli and C. rodentium to cause severe disease in humans and mice, respectively. But how the NleB protein did this was unknown."

According to Hardwidge, once bacteria such as C. rodentium and E. coli enter the body, the pathogens use a needle-like secretion apparatus to inject bacterial proteins into intestinal cells. Some of these proteins prevent the innate immune system from fighting the bacterium. One of these injected proteins is NleB.

Hardwidge and colleagues observed that the NleB protein binds with a protein in human cells named GAPDH. NleB modifies the GAPDH protein with a specific sugar molecule and prevents it from participating in a complex biochemical pathway that ultimately allows the innate immune system to respond efficiently to pathogens.

"The function of GAPDH in this pathway was less clear before we did these experiments," Hardwidge said. "GAPDH has well-known functions in the metabolism, but we observed that it also participates in how a cell responds to an infecting bacterium. We're very interested in the fact that this metabolic enzyme has apparently evolved also to be an important part of the innate immune system."

Hardwidge said that E. coli and C. rodentium using the NleB protein to target GAPDH and inhibit innate immunity is also an interesting finding, which will be characterized in greater detail in continuing studies.

With a more advanced understanding about how the innate immune system responds biochemically to invading bacteria -- and how those bacteria suppress the response -- scientists may be able to advance research and therapeutic drug development in other diseases, Hardwidge said. For example, cancers, Crohn's disease and Rheumatoid arthritis all are tied to overactive inflammation. In some cases, the same pathway in which GAPDH participates regulates the inflammation.

"The cell is so complicated, it's amazing that it even works at all, especially when you consider that it is three-dimensional and compartmentalized," Hardwidge said. "We have a general understanding about this important pathway that triggers a defensive response. But when you get into the details of how this pathway is regulated, we're still learning and understanding what exactly is going on. Now, low and behold, there is a new protein involved."
