Zambia?s ex-president Kenneth Kaunda was on Saturday hospitalised for an undisclosed ailment.
?The family members have decided that the church service be postponed due to Kenneth Kaunda?s sudden illness. Dr. Kaunda has? been hospitalised at the University Teaching Hospital,? said secretary to the cabinet Roland Msiska in a statement.
Kaunda?s wife, Betty, died on Wednesday in Zimbabwe and the government has accorded her three days of national mourning.
The former first lady had been due to be buried on Sunday.

Newark Mayor Booker softens criticism of Obama campaign tactic

Democratic Newark Mayor, and a listed surrogate for Obama's presidential campaign, Cory Booker had some harsh words Sunday on Meet the Press for an Obama campaign ad that seeks to attack Mitt Romney's past as a venture capitalist at Bain Capital.

I?m not about to sit here and indict private equity. To me, it?s just we?re getting to a ridiculous point in America, especially that I know I live in a state where pension funds, unions and other people are investing in companies like Bain Capital. If you look at the totality of Bain Capital?s record, they?ve done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses.... This kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It?s nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity.

Before the day was over, the Romney campaign had released an ad and the GOP had organized an online petition using Booker's words to attack their opponent. As the GOP pounced, Booker backtracked, releasing a video statement in which he reiterated his support for the president and said,

Mitt Romney has made his business record a centerpiece of his campaign. He?s talked about himself as a job creator. And therefore it is reasonable ? and in fact I encourage it ? for the Obama campaign to examine that record and discuss it. I have no problem with that. In fact, I believe that Mitt Romney, in many ways, is not being completely honest with his role and his record even while a businessperson, and is shaping it to serve his political interest ? and not necessarily including all the facts of his time there.

Cancer research yields unexpected new way to produce nylon

ScienceDaily (Sep. 23, 2012) ? In their quest for a cancer cure, researchers at the Duke Cancer Institute made a serendipitous discovery -- a molecule necessary for cheaper and greener ways to produce nylon.

The finding, described in the Sept. 23, 2012, issue of the journal Nature Chemical Biology, arose from an intriguing notion that some of the genetic and chemical changes in cancer tumors might be harnessed for beneficial uses.

"In our lab, we study genetic changes that cause healthy tissues to go bad and grow into tumors. The goal of this research is to understand how the tumors develop in order to design better treatments," said Zachary J. Reitman, Ph.D., an associate in research at Duke and lead author of the study. "As it turns out, a bit of information we learned in that process paves the way for a better method to produce nylon."

Nylon is a ubiquitous material, used in carpeting, upholstery, auto parts, apparel and other products. A key component for its production is adipic acid, which is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world. Currently, adipic acid is produced from fossil fuel, and the pollution released from the refinement process is a leading contributor to global warming.

Reitman said he and colleagues delved into the adipic acid problem based on similarities between cancer research techniques and biochemical engineering. Both fields rely on enzymes, which are molecules that convert one small chemical to another. Enzymes play a major role in both healthy tissues and in tumors, but they are also used to convert organic matter into synthetic materials such as adipic acid.

One of the most promising approaches being studied today for environmentally friendly adipic acid production uses a series of enzymes as an assembly line to convert cheap sugars into adipic acid. However, one critical enzyme in the series, called a 2-hydroxyadipate dehydrogenase, has never been produced, leaving a missing link in the assembly line.

This is where the cancer research comes in. In 2008 and 2009, Duke researchers, including Hai Yan, M.D., PhD., identified a genetic mutation in glioblastomas and other brain tumors that alters the function of an enzyme known as an isocitrate dehydrogenase.

Reitman and colleagues had a hunch that the genetic mutation seen in cancer might trigger a similar functional change to a closely related enzyme found in yeast and bacteria (homoisocitrate dehydrogenase), which would create the elusive 2-hydroxyadipate dehydrogenase necessary for "green" adipic acid production.

They were right. The functional mutation observed in cancer could be constructively applied to other closely related enzymes, creating a beneficial outcome -- in this case the missing link that could enable adipic acid production from cheap sugars. The next step will be to scale up the overall adipic acid production process, which remains a considerable undertaking.

"It's exciting that sequencing cancer genomes can help us to discover new enzyme activities," Reitman said. "Even genetic changes that occur in only a few patients could reveal useful new enzyme functions that were not obvious before."

Yan, a professor in the Department of Pathology and senior author of the study, said the research demonstrates how an investment in medical research can be applied broadly to solve other significant issues of the day.

"This is the result of a cancer researcher thinking outside the box to produce a new enzyme and create a precursor for nylon production," Yan said. "Not only is this discovery exciting, it reaffirms the commitment we should be making to science and to encouraging young people to pursue science."

In addition to Reitman and Yan, study authors include Bryan D. Choi, Ivan Spasojevic, Darell D. Bigner and John H. Sampson. The work was supported with funds from the National Institutes of Health (R01 CA1403160). The authors are listed on a patent that is pending related to the mutated enzymes.

Neither Bell Canada nor Telus will carry the Lumia 920, Rogers may be exclusive

The carriers? responses to a couple of customer inquiries about the next flagship device from Nokia revealed that the Lumia 920 is not in their plans.

TELUS was arguably a little cryptic, stating that ?The Nokia 920 is not part of the list of phones coming to TELUS by the end of the year.? That could mean that a Nokia Windows Phone 8 will find a place in their stable next year. The Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 610 have been part of their line-up, so hopefully a relationship will remain between the carrier and the Finnish manufacturer.

Bell Canada does indeed plan on offering two Windows Phone 8 devices, but neither of them will be the Lumia 920. The devices have not been announced by Bell yet, but there are not so many choices to pick from. As Bell does not currently offer any Huawei devices in their line-up, we are pretty comfortable setting the expectation that they will offer the Samsung ATIV S and one of the HTC 8 devices.

That leaves Rogers, and Canada?s largest carrier has not yet announced if the new Lumias will be offered. Since they do sell the Lumia 900, one would hope that the 920 will follow later this year.

Republicans See Hopes for Florida Senate Seat Fade

The Florida race for U.S. Senate seat appears to be turning into a voters? choice for the most acceptable candidate when deciding between two unpopular choices and perhaps a missed opportunity for Republicans.

In their quest to regain control of the Senate, Republicans took early aim at two-term Democrat Sen. Bill Nelson, portraying him as a Washington insider who was past his prime.

However, GOP Rep. Connie Mack IV has failed to capitalize on those advantages and has fallen behind in recent polls.

Mack trail Nelson by 7 percentage points, according to a Sept. 4 poll by Democrat-leaning Public Policy Polling. The poll also gave Nelson a favorability rating of 35 percent compared to 27 percent for Mack. The 69-year-old Nelson was leading by 2 percentage points, according to a July poll by the firm.

In addition, a poll released this week by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research shows Nelson leading Mack 48 percent to 40 percent, a three-point gain compared to the nonpartisan firm?s July poll.

The Mack campaign says the polls show Nelson?s campaign has stalled and that he cannot reach the all-important 50 percent, despite ?a month of spending millions of dollars running perhaps the most obnoxiously negative personal smear campaigns? in the history of Florida politics.

?The people of Florida ? want and deserve a senator who will stand with them and fight for them ? not a 40-year, ?career politician who tells them one thing and then votes like a lock-step liberal with Barack Obama,? Mack campaign manager Jeff Cohen said Friday.

Perhaps the most positive number out of the recent polls was the percentage of undecided voters in the Mason-Dixon telephone survey of 800 registered voters ? an unusually high 11 percent.

While Republicans are trying to ride the anti-incumbent wave that helped them in 2010 win control of the House, Democrats have publicized Mack?s incidents of road rage and fights to portray him as too volatile for public office.

Democrats hold 23 of the 33 Senate seats up for grabs in November. They also have a 51-47 majority and votes from two independent senators, which mean Republicans would need a net gain of at least four seats on Election Day.

The Nelson campaign says the 45-year-old Mack -- the son of a senator, great-grandson of a baseball legend and husband of the widow of the late Sonny Bono ?trails despite huge financial support from outside money.

??What?s interesting is this comes after there have been $9.2 million in false and negative TV ads against Nelson from outside groups and super PACs tied to the?Koch brothers, Karl Rove?and undisclosed corporate dollars behind the U.S. Chamber of Commerce?s political attack arm,? said the campaign, according to The Orlando Sentinel.?

U.S. Considering Total Ban on Asbestos - The U.S. government is debating the passage of a total ban on asbestos and asbestos-containing products.

Many people might remember actor Steve McQueen for his eponymous role in the movie Bullitt, where he performed what is widely considered to be one of the greatest car-chase scenes of all time. Off screen, though, McQueen garnered a more tragic notoriety when - like countless others of his generation - died from mesothelioma. He was just 50 years old when the cancer, caused by exposure to asbestos, took his life.

Now, McQueen's widow, Barbara McQueen, is using the actor's legacy to try and convince federal lawmakers to finally ban the sale and use of asbestos in the United States.

In July, Mrs. McQueen spoke at a House of Representatives staff briefing in an effort to generate support for the Safer Chemicals Act of 2012. She participated in the event as part of a contingent representing the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization.

Asbestos: Deadly, Yet Common

Asbestos is a naturally-occurring fibrous mineral. It has long been valued for its pliability and heat-resistant properties, and it was used as a fire retardant for decades. That utility, however, comes at a very steep price. Working with asbestos releases microscopic fibers into the air which, when inhaled into the lungs, can cause mesothelioma, a devastating and incurable type of cancer.

The World Health Organization classifies asbestos as a "serious carcinogen."

Because of the extreme health risks surrounding asbestos use, the substance has been banned by every member of the European Union in recent years. The United States, however, has not followed suit.

In 1989, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency attempted to ban most uses of asbestos. Unfortunately, the agency's efforts were overturned by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Court allowed the EPA to ban both new and outdated uses of asbestos, but prohibited the agency from banning existing uses. It did so even though it recognized that "asbestos is a potential carcinogen at all levels of exposure."

As a result, dangerous asbestos fibers can be found in all sorts of consumer products. Some of the most common asbestos-containing products include insulation, roofing materials, gaskets, brake materials, furnace and pipe cement and heat-resistant clothing. In addition, because asbestos-containing products were once so widely used in the construction industry, many older buildings and homes contain asbestos that can be extremely harmful if it is disturbed during demolition or renovation.

It is still unclear whether the asbestos ban will be passed or if it will again fail to garner adequate support. Even if it does, mesothelioma will be a sad reality for many years to come. Mesothelioma has a very long latency period - often, the cancer does not appear until years or even decades after the initial exposure.

Because of this long gap between exposure and illness, many mesothelioma victims have a hard time identifying all potential sources of asbestos exposure.
