Babies born in the 21st century are lucky as they have a lot of different kinds of toys to play with. I remember I did not have a lot of toys when I was small. Though these toys provide babies with great fun, they also pose great dangers to babies. If mothers do not clean the toys properly, babies may catch sickness like cold and diarrhea easily.
If you are a mother, it is not difficult for you to notice that babies always put their hands, toys and everything they grabbed into their mouths. It is not because your baby is naughty as suckling is their inborn reflex action. But the problem with this reflex action lies on the germs and bacteria that accumulated on the baby toys. Some mothers have already developed a good habit of regular cleaning of baby toys. But, they use soapy water and bleach to clean them. Soapy water and bleach are chemicals and obviously their residues can be harmful to babies.
To clean baby toys, you may not necessarily need soapy water and bleach. You can use natural cleaners that can be found in your kitchen. The most common and effective ones are baking soda and vinegar. These two natural cleaners are inexpensive, safe and easy to use. You can use them for different kinds of toys including plastic ones and stuffed ones.
For plastic toys, you can first mix 1 cup of distilled water and 1 cup of vinegar in a clean bucket. Soak the toys into the mixture for around 15 minutes. Then use a clean rag to rub the surface of the toys. Allow the toys to air dry. If you wish to clean your toy more often, you put the water and vinegar mixture into a spray bottle. Spray on the toys and wipe clean the surface.
Cleaning with white vinegar and baking soda is not limited to plastic toys only. Stuffed toys can also be cleaned with white vinegar and baking soda. If you wish to hand wash the stuffed toys, gather them in a sink or tub. Sprinkle some baking soda onto the toys and wait for 10 ? 15 minutes. Then, add water to the tub and wash the toys. Finally, rinse the toys with water and vinegar solution. Again, if you do not like the smell of vinegar, you can rinse with water one more time. If you use machine to wash the stuffed toys, simply use baking soda as your laundry powder. Add 3 cupful of white vinegar to water during rinse cycle.
Some mothers clean the baby toys every day and that makes them feel tired. Some mothers do not really clean the baby toys and that makes me feel uncomfortable. In fact, there is no specific guideline or rule that saying how often you should clean the baby toys. But, it is better for you to start a good habit saying once or twice a month. But, when your baby is recovering from sickness or when the toys are played by other children, you may consider cleaning the toys immediately or more frequently.
