Top gaming execs agree: create a complete experience

The NY Games Conference opened with a very informative view from the top of the industry.

Not surprisingly, a decent amount of the conversation focused on the variety of platforms where games can be developed. While clear that much of the gaming market is headed towards mobile, other platforms came up in the conversation as well.

David Grijns of Avalanche said the most important thing is to focus on what you know. Avalanche focuses on exploratory sandbox games, and is excited about the performance improvements of consoles which will continue to lead the way for more complex games.

Dan Porter of Zynga/OMGPOP spoke of the ability of mobile games to connect people, since that is what the phone is all about.

Several panelists, including Anders Lindeberg at Rovio, spoke of the risks of focusing on only one platform for distribution. Rovio blazed the trail in terms of leveraging their strong awareness of Angry Birds to monetize through branded products and even experiences such as theme parks in China.

One thing that everyone seemed to agree on is that the quality of the user experience is the most important area of focus. As Matthew Evans from Nickelodeon said ??it?s better to come out with fewer, better quality games, than a lot of games where you haven?t put in that extra 20 percent effort.
