Following on from,?Part 1?,?Part 2,?Part 3,?Part 4?and Part 5?of this 7 part blog series, we are now going to look at the last level in the 5-level relationship model ? inner circle. We explore how to identify a relationship which has got to this level, and how to keep it there.
The main difference between a level 4 and 5 relationship is that the boundaries between the personal and professional relationship have become blurred. You know that your relationship has reached this point when you find yourself sharing in each other?s personal life, for example attending a family barbeque. Very often the step between level 4 and level 5 happens naturally and seamlessly ? however, I have been known to proactively take steps to move the relationship to level 5. For example, anyone who I connect with on Facebook is either a family member, or related to a family member, someone I went to school or university with, previously worked with, or someone who I would be happy to invite over for dinner.
To keep the relationship at level 5, needs a little more diligence and focus to keep the relationship at level 4. Don?t forget you still need a regular programme of opportunities to chit chat combined with lunches, phone calls and coffees. The only difference is that this regular programme of face-to-face conversations needs to include some non-work related events, such as attending the theatre together or going to a sports event together.
In our next blog post, the last in the series, we will look at how to apply your knowledge of the 5-level relationship level model for more effective business networking.
