How, in the animal world, a daughter avoids mating with her father: Paternal 'voice' recognition

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Paternal recognition -- being able to identify males from your father's line -- is important for the avoidance of inbreeding, and one way that mammals can do this is through recognizing the calls of paternal kin. This was thought to occur only in large-brained animals with complex social groups, but a new study published November 30 in the open access journal BMC Ecology provides evidence in a tiny, solitary primate that challenges this theory.

The study, led by Sharon E Kessler, finds that the grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus) -- a small-brained, solitary foraging mammal endemic to Madagascar -- is able to recognize paternal relatives via vocalizations, thus providing evidence that this is not dependent upon having a large brain and a high social complexity, as previously suggested.

Because grey mouse lemurs are nocturnal solitary-foragers living in dense forests, vocal communication is important for regulating social interactions across distances where visibility is poor and communication via smell is limited. Though the mouse lemur shares sleeping sites with other mouse lemurs, it forages alone for fruit and insects. It is a particularly interesting species with which to study vocal paternal recognition because, in the wild, females remain in the same area of birth and cooperatively raise young with other female kin. Males do not co-nest with their mates or young and provide no paternal care, which limits opportunities for familiarity-based social interactions. Thus, vocalizations are likely to be important -- particularly for avoiding inbreeding.

The research team from Arizona State University and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany found that two of the most frequent calls of the mouse lemur were the mate advertisement call and the alarm call. Using multi-parametric analyses of the call's acoustic parameters, they could see that both call types contained individual signatures. Through this, they discovered that only male grey mouse lemur advertisement calls, but not alarm calls, contained acoustic paternal signatures. Furthermore, females paid more attention to advertisement calls from unrelated males than from their fathers.

The findings from the study suggest that the discrimination between mate advertisement calls and alarm calls may be an important mechanism for inbreeding avoidance. This is likely to be highly important in the grey mouse lemur species because males are likely to remain in an area for several years and they can expand their ranges to more than twice that of the female's range, making it likely that adult males' ranges will overlap with those of their daughters from previous mating seasons.

The team also proposed that the mouse lemur's ultrasonic calls above the hearing range of owls could be an anti-predator strategy, especially since the species suffers from high predation.

Lead author Kessler commented, "Given that more complex forms of sociality with cohesive foraging groups are thought to have evolved from an ancestral solitary forager much like the mouse lemur, this suggests that the mechanisms for kin recognition like those seen here may be the foundation from which more complex forms of kin-based sociality evolved."

She continued, "Future analyses will determine which acoustic parameters make this kin recognition possible by artificially manipulating acoustic parameters in the calls and then using the modified calls in playback experiments."

You touch the screen, and it responds like a tablet. Maybe you open the laptop?s lid, and it keeps on opening -- all the way around, until it?s lying flat against the underside of the computer. Or maybe you slide the keyboard out from under the screen when you need it, and return to touch input when you?re just browsing online.

These are the kinds of features found in a nifty new class of computers called Ultrabook convertibles. You might remember the Ultrabook ? the line launched last year as a collection of thin-and-light laptops powered by Intel Core chips. At the time, it might have been considered the PC world?s response to the Macbook Air.

Now, as manufacturers have had more time to consider how to make laptops truly portable, they?ve come up with a range of designs that are actually unique. With so many swivelling, spinning screens, you might mistake the PC section of a Best Buy for a circus.

The Lenovo Ideapad Yoga, for example, has a hinge that allows the screen to fold around so it lies flat on the back of the keyboard. Turn the machine over (the keyboard turns off automatically) and you?ve got a tablet, albeit one with a big 13-inch display. The Dell XPS Duo 12 (pictured, above) has a touchscreen that turns vertically within its bezel ? so you can flip the screen up to use it as a tablet while it?s resting on the keyboard deck. The ASUS Taichi has two screens, one on each side of the lid, and you can flip between them with a touch. All of the Ultrabook convertibles run Windows 8, which is designed to work on computers and tablets alike, and ? blessedly ? all have a full range of useful ports, including USB and HDMI.

The reason there are so many different Ultrabook designs is that customers can?t decide on just one, says Merlin Kister, Intel?s director of consumer PC brand strategy management.

?Some people liked having a screen that flips over and some people liked just having two displays,? he says, ?so each manufacturer has staked out a different niche.? That?s no exaggeration: In addition to spinning and swivelling models, there are also Ultrabooks that can slide open like giant phones, or open to lay perfectly flat, or fold into other interesting configurations.

The new crop of Ultrabooks also have some welcome under-the-hood improvements. Intel bakes anti-theft technology into the processors, so you can lock or wipe the machine remotely if it gets stolen ? even if the hard drive is replaced. And the company is also rolling out identity protection that authenticates websites against your specific machine, providing a measure of safety even if a password gets stolen.

Ultrabook convertibles can get pretty pricey ? the flagship models are generally a hair over $1,000 ? and for many people a traditional laptop is still just fine.

But it?s undeniably cool ? and actually?useful?? to switch back and forth between laptop and tablet mode on one device. Browse Web pages with touch gestures; write thoughtful emails with a hardware keyboard. While the technology still needs to mature a bit, these devices feel like meaningful steps toward a future in which portable devices are neither only laptop nor only tablet ? instead, they conform themselves to meet the need at hand.

Cable News Ratings November 2012: CNN, Fox News, MSNBC Buoyed By Election (PHOTOS, POLL)

November was game time for the cable news networks, and there were winners all around.

Fox News dominated as usual, taking the top eight programs. The network averaged 2.6 million total viewers during primetime, for a 47% jump since November 2011.

The month also saw positive results for MSNBC, which grew 76% among total viewers during primetime and more than doubled its primetime viewers in the coveted 25-54 demo. All of the network's primetime programming saw huge gains: "The Rachel Maddow Show" increased its total viewers by 72%, "Last Word With Lawrence O'Donnell" by 66% and "PoliticsNation With Al Sharpton" by 58%.

There was some good news for CNN, which jumped 64% in total viewers during primetime and also more than doubled its audience in the key demo. The network won the ratings battle on election night, drawing 8.84 million viewers to beat Fox News' 8.7 million.

It was another sign of hope for the struggling network, which just chose Jeff Zucker as its new chief. "Anderson Cooper 360" and "Piers Morgan Tonight" continued to lead CNN. They grew their total audiences by 41% and 46% respectively, compared to this time last year.

Scientists design 3-D printed satellite

Seeking?a low-cost way to launch their experiments into space, a team of scientists has designed a space-ready, 3-D printed CubeSat.

CubeSats are standardized, tiny satellites, often only 3.9 inches on each side and weighing just under 3 pounds. They are so small that they have room for only a few sensors, and burn up in the Earth's atmosphere after just a few months. Kits cost under $10,000, which is considered cheap for the space industry. But Jacopo Piattoni of the University of Bologna and his team aim to drive the satellites' price down even further, while making the devices easier to customize.

In 3-D printing, a computer-directed nozzle "prints" a three-dimensional object in plastic. Often, engineers use this method to design a prototype for a product that will then be built out of metal or another, sturdier medium. But Piattoni?s team hopes their plastic CubeSat could survive launch and low-Earth orbit.

Using 3-D printers, researchers can automate the CubeSat production process. ?We don?t need a technician,? Piattoni said, adding that this also makes the process faster.

The CubeSat?s sensors and computer chips, of course, weren't printed in the lab, and the team had to add a small, metal heat sink to disperse the electronic components' heat. The method holds promise, though. When the researchers tested the chassis in near-space conditions, "it did really well," Piattoni said.

Piattoni chose ABS plastic, the same type of plastic used in Lego bricks, to construct his CubeSat because of that material's resilience to extreme temperatures, vibrations, radiation and more. A satellite will absorb a lot of solar radiation during its spaceflight, and its temperature will swing from -4 degrees F (-20 degrees C) to 176 degrees F (80 degrees C) each orbit. "It's not so easy for plastics in that environment," Piattoni said.

In fact, ABS plastic was famously indicted in a massive seat-belt buckle recall in the mid-90s because UV radiation weakened buckles made from the material. But such radiation, even at elevated levels, won't pose a problem for the CubeSat, due to its short lifetime.

With one successful satellite constructed, the team can now use the 3-D printer to crank out another copy each night. They can also test new designs or build support for other sensors or modules, just by clicking a few buttons on a computer.

The final product passed its tests with flying colors. Now, like most other CubeSats, it will hitch a ride into space as secondary cargo on a rocket already headed to its preferred orbit. Piattoni's team is working with QB50, which will put 50 CubeSats into orbit at once on a Russian Shtil-2.1 scheduled to launch in 2014.

The satellite was designed and tested by Piattoni and researchers in the University of Rome's Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energy Engineering and the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Bangladesh clothes workers die in factory fire

DHAKA (Reuters) - A fire swept through a garment factory on the outskirts of Bangladesh's capital on Saturday, killing at least nine people and injuring more than 100, police and witnesses said.

The fire at the nine-story factory in the Ashulia industrial belt started on the ground floor and quickly spread. Firefighters took nearly five hours to extinguish the flames.

Most of the victims died as they jumped from the building to escape the flames, a police official said. The death toll could rise, witnesses said.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear.

This ranking comes from a survey of U.S. real estate professionals?investors, developers, operators, and so on?asking respondents to name their greatest concerns in three different categories: Economic/Financial, Social/Political, and Real Estate/Development.?Each of the issues in these three categories received a score between 1 and 5. The most popular choices appear above.

Interesting side note: Social/Political issues like terrorism/war, social inequality, and global warming received far lower scores than such issues as interest rates and tax policies. ?I don?t have a joke or glib remark to follow that; it?s just an observation.

Of course, there?s a lot of overlap among these issues. Job growth goes hand-in-hand with numerous other concerns, whether general economic matters or specific real estate concerns.

In light of these issues, it isn?t too difficult to guess how the real estate industry will proceed next year. We can expect further demand and high activity in the core markets, and certain core neighborhoods that are supported by drivers like a transit hub, large university, or popular commercial district. As far as core markets go, the ULI suggests, it will be far more profitable to develop (or, in most cases, renovate/repurpose) properties than acquire existing product at super-low cap rates.

Unfortunately, these concerns also suggest further sluggish activity in secondary and tertiary markets, but even these markets offer some opportunities in existing properties, as well as industrial and multifamily. As always, the advantage will go to CRE markets with a high volume of technology and energy industry companies.

Texans top Lions 34-31 in OT after coach's mistake

DETROIT (AP) ? Jim Schwartz threw a challenge flag when he didn't need to and the Houston Texans made him regret it.

Shayne Graham's 32-yard field goal with 2:21 left in overtime lifted Houston to a 34-31 win over the Detroit Lions on Thursday after their coach broke an NFL rule by attempting to challenge a scoring play.

"Obviously that's a big break in the game for us," Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. "But I think you make your breaks when you work your tail off."

Detroit kicker Jason Hanson had a chance to get Schwartz off the hook, but his 47-yard field goal attempt on the fifth possession of the extra period hit the right upright.

Lions defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch did, too, on the previous possession when he couldn't intercept a pass Matt Schaub threw directly at him deep in Houston territory.

Detroit might've won in regulation if its coach didn't make a costly mistake.

Schwartz threw a challenge flag when Houston's Justin Forsett scored on an 81-yard touchdown run in the third quarter after two Lions tackled him.

"Give him credit for continuing to play football," Kubiak said. "We talk about that all the time. You don't stop, you play."

Replays showed Forsett's left knee and elbow hit the turf near midfield, and the automatic review that accompanies all scoring plays probably would have taken the TD off the board. But NFL rules say that throwing the challenge flag on a scoring play negates the review ? and is an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to boot.

"It's on me," Schwartz could be seen saying to assistants and players on the sideline as he tapped his chest. "It's on me."

Yes, it was.

Forsett even acknowledged he shouldn't have allowed to score.

"I know now that I was down, but I didn't think I was during the play," he said. "I didn't think my knee hit, and there was no whistle, so I kept going.

"I wasn't giving the touchdown back."

That score pulled Houston within three points.

"I knew the rule ? you can't challenge on a turnover or a scoring play ? but I was so mad that I overreacted," said Schwartz, whose temper got the best of him during a postgame handshake last year with San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh. "I had the flag in my hand before he even scored because he was obviously down."

Kubiak had no sympathy.

"A rule's a rule," Kubiak said. "I know one thing: You've got to keep your flag tucked in your pocket."

Arian Foster ran for 102 yards and two scores, including a 1-yard run with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter to cap a 15-play, 97-yard drive that tied the game at 31.

AFC South-leading Houston (10-1) took its first lead when Graham made up for missing a field goal earlier in OT after teammate Danieal Manning ripped the football away from Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew at its 32 on the first drive of the extra period.

The Texans have won five straight ? two in a row in OT ? and if a handful of teams lose they could be in the playoffs by the time they get back on the practice field after a long weekend.

"Ten quarters in five days, it's draining physically and mentally," Texans defensive end J.J. Watt said. "But our team persevered."

And, the Lions wilted and blew a fourth-quarter lead during a second straight setback.

Detroit (4-7) has lost three straight to make it extremely difficult to reach its goal of earning a spot in consecutive postseasons for the first time since the mid-1990s.

And as if the Lions don't have enough problems, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh could be in trouble with the league again after his left cleat connected with Schaub's groin area in the first quarter.

"I really don't have anything to say about that play or that person," Schaub said.

Suh was on his chest, taken down by an offensive lineman, when he extended his left foot below Schaub's belt.

It wasn't clear on replays whether the kick was intentional, but Suh might struggle to get the benefit of doubt and perhaps that's why he didn't stick around long enough to talk to reporters after the game.

Last year on Thanksgiving, Suh was ejected for stomping on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith and was suspended for two games. He has been fined in previous seasons for roughing up quarterbacks: Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, Chicago's Jay Cutler and Cleveland's Jake Delhomme.

Schaub shook off the blow, stayed in the game, and was 29 of 48 for 315 yards with a 9-yard TD to Owen Daniels to tie the game at 14 late in the first half and an interception.

Houston's Andre Johnson had nine receptions for 188 yards. Watt had three sacks, one on Detroit's first snap and the other two that helped the Texans stay within a TD late in the game.

Detroit scored four go-ahead TDs, including on Joique Bell's 23-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and had a 10-point lead midway through the third quarter.

The Lions drove deep enough into Houston territory in the fourth to put Hanson in a position to give them another 10-point lead, but Watt forced them to punt each time with sacks on third downs.

"We got what we deserved," Matthew Stafford said. "We didn't capitalize on our chances."

Stafford was 31 of 61 for 441 yards with two TDs ? tiebreaking scores to Calvin Johnson and Mike Thomas in the second quarter ? for 441 yards.

Mikel Leshoure ran for 32 yards on 12 carries and gave the Lions their first TD on an opening possession that marked the first rushing score on the ground against Houston.

Those accomplishments along with providing entertainment for the nationally televised audience for a change on Thanksgiving was of little consolation for the franchise.

The Lions lost their previous eight games on the holiday by an averaging of three-plus touchdowns.

Detroit extended the longest losing streak in its annual showcase to nine in a closely contested matchup that will linger in the minds of many people, especially Vanden Bosch, one of many Lions who could've changed the outcome by picking off a pass that hit his hands in a wild OT.

"It's going to be really tough to forget that one," Vanden Bosch said.

NOTES: Lions OT Jeff Backus (right hamstring) was inactive, ending his 186-game starting streak. ... Houston LB Brooks Reed (left groin) and OT Derek Newton (knee) were injured during the game.

Gold medalist Oksana Baiul sues talent agency

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Olympic gold medalist Oksana Baiul (by-YOOL') is suing a talent agency claiming it mismanaged money she earned after her gold medal-winning figure skating performance in 1994.

The lawsuit filed in Los Angeles claims she signed contracts with the William Morris Agency shortly after her victory but only recently discovered that hundreds of thousands of dollars had gone uncollected or were improperly spent.

The lawsuit claims the Ukrainian-born skater signed the agreements without being able to read, write or understand English. She claims the agency failed to properly explain agreements to her and misrepresented the amounts she is owed.

The agency, now known as William Morris Endeavor, declined comment.

Baiul now lives in Pennsylvania and is seeking more than $1 million, although the exact amount owed would be determined by jurors.

Puerto Rican boxing champ Camacho brain dead after shooting

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) - Former three-time world boxing champion Hector "Macho" Camacho is brain dead following a drive-by shooting in Puerto Rico, a doctor said on Thursday.

Relatives are expected to decide on Thursday whether to remove Camacho, 50, from life support, said Dr. Ernesto Torres, director of the Rio Piedras Medical Center in Puerto Rico.

Camacho "is clinically brain dead," Torres told reporters. "We have done all we can do."

Camacho was shot in the neck and face late on Tuesday when he sat in a parked car in Bayamon, a San Juan suburb. The driver was killed, and police have no motive for the shooting.

Camacho was hit in the jaw by a bullet that fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder.

Torres said Camacho was in a deep coma and unresponsive. Brain studies taken overnight were negative and the results were taken to a neurologist for a final determination.

Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, and other relatives were going to be updated about the former boxer's condition, Torres said.

Backing tough talk, Israeli premier wages 1st war

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Throughout his long political career, Israel's prime minister has earned a reputation as a tough talker. An ardent hawk who wrote a book about how to defeat terrorism, Benjamin Netanyahu has previously threatened to attack Iran, topple Gaza's Hamas leaders and strike hard at Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

But only now, after seven years in power, he has finally pulled the trigger, unleashing an offensive to stop Gaza rocket salvos. The public and even his political opponents have all lined up behind him.

Barring a fiasco involving heavy Israeli casualties, the operation should help Netanyahu coast to victory in the upcoming Israeli elections.

While his more dovish predecessors have carried out daring military operations in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon and reportedly beyond, Netanyahu's reign has surprisingly been categorized by restraint. Just a month ago, in a speech before parliament, he boasted that as prime minister, he "didn't wage any unnecessary wars or any wars at all."

The comments appeared to be a swipe at his predecessor, centrist Ehud Olmert, who launched two wars in his three years as prime minister between 2006 and 2009.

Despite his bellicose language, Netanyahu has proven to be a careful commander in chief, said political analyst Hanan Kristal.

"Olmert had a short fuse. He was a diplomatic dove and a military hawk, while Bibi is a diplomatic hawk, but he's not a military hawk," he said, using Netanyahu's nickname. "In the opposition, he's a populist. There's no war he doesn't support or encourage. But once he gets to power, he's cautious, he consults, he doesn't shoot from the hip."

For months, Netanyahu refrained from major retaliation against rocket attacks from Gaza against southern Israel. Kristal said he ultimately gave the order only after a public outcry and after making sure the top military brass supported the move.

Netanyahu claims he has never before had to act militarily, since his tough stance has deterred Israel's enemies from testing him. Moshe Arens, Netanyahu's onetime political mentor, said this time Hamas aggression toward Israel forced his hand.

"This wasn't his decision alone to make. It wasn't a matter of initiative, it was forced by reality," said Arens, a former defense minister and foreign minister. "He's a smart guy with lots of knowledge. He's seasoned and prepared to handle the situation."

Netanyahu has been burned by missions in the past.

In his first term in office, from 1996 to 1999, his most brazen operation backfired when two Mossad agents posing as Canadian tourists were captured in Jordan after trying to kill Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal by injecting him with poison.

Under international pressure, Israel was forced to send an antidote that saved Mashaal's life. Mashaal is still the leader of Hamas, meeting in Cairo Monday with Egyptian officials about the Gaza conflict.

Netanyahu's decision to open a tunnel beneath the Old City of Jerusalem sparked riots in which dozens of Israelis and Palestinians were killed. Opponents criticized him for not foreseeing the consequences of such an action in the region's most sensitive spot.

Since returning to power in 2009, a more sober Netanyahu has sought a consensus for every major decision.

Lacking the military pedigree of former prime ministers like ex-generals Yitzhak Rabin, Ariel Sharon and Ehud Barak, Netanyahu tends to seek military approval when using force.

For example, Netanyahu reportedly ordered the military to go on high alert for a looming attack on Iran's nuclear program two years ago, but he backed off following strong objections from senior security officials, according to a recent expose by a respected Israeli investigative news program.

This time the military is on his side. So is Barak, a former military chief who now serves as Netanyahu's defense minister.

So far, the public has been overwhelmingly behind them. A Dialog poll published Monday in the Haaretz daily said 84 percent of Israelis supported the offensive, and 55 percent approved of Netanyahu's performance, a big boost from his previous numbers. The poll surveyed 520 Israelis and had a margin of error of 4.4 percent.

With Israeli elections just two months away, Netanyahu was already far ahead in the polls. The Gaza offensive has boosted his numbers further. According to Monday's Haaretz poll, Netanyahu's Likud Party would be the largest party in parliament and would have no trouble putting together another ruling coalition.

Netanyahu's political prospects are also improved because his main opponents have even less military background than he does and they have been running a campaign that focused primarily on economic and social issues, and now the focus has been shifted back to security.

Netanyahu's position could still be precarious.

His popularity could take a beating if a ground operation goes awry or, alternatively, if he is perceived to have halted the campaign before reaching its goal ? the end of rocket fire toward southern Israel.

Olmert's approval numbers plummeted during the Lebanon war in 2006, when a ground operation produced large Israeli casualties and failed to stop Hezbollah guerrillas from firing rockets into Israel.

"You'd have to be a saint for these thoughts not to pass in the mind of a politician, and we are not dealing with saints here," wrote Sima Kadmon, the Yediot Ahronot daily's political columnist.

The Haaretz poll showed that 63 percent of Israelis rejected the notion that Netanyahu's main motive for the attack was political, which may help explain why Israel's notoriously rancorous political system has been largely supportive of the offensive.

"We are not criticizing him now because we are in a state of war and we want to win and restore quiet to southern Israel," said Yoel Hasson, an opposition lawmaker from the centrist Kadima Party and a frequent Netanyahu critic. "When it comes to Hamas, there is no right and no left in Israel, no coalition and no opposition."

Seth Davis, a college basketball analyst who works for CBS and Sports Illustrated, happened to catch pictures from UFC 154 this weekend. It was apparently too much for Davis, because he sent out these tweets to his 108,068 followers:

He later apologized and deleted the tweets, but his ignorant thoughts were out there. He could have taken the time to learn about the sport, about how MMA fighters take less blows to the head than boxers, or how many people love MMA. Instead, he took the low road.

Both of the outlets Davis works for cover MMA. CBS was the first network to air MMA when they were partnered with Elite XC. It would not have been difficult for Davis to learn about MMA.

Here's the thing: I don't like college basketball. When the rest of the country goes insane over March Madness, I head to the NCAA wrestling tournament. I'll watch my alma mater play out of loyalty, but that's about it.

But I don't deny that the athletes who play the sport are full of heart and athleticism. I don't rip it as something sexual, even when athletes find themselves tangled up when going for the ball. I don't make uneducated statements about who should or shouldn't be watching the game. I don't disrespect the athletes, coaches and fans who do care about the sport.

It was nice of Davis to apologize, but it's sad that he had to share these thoughts in the first place.

U.S. board issues subpoena on offshore platform blast

HOUSTON (Reuters) - A U.S. industrial accident investigative board served Black Elk Energy with a subpoena on Monday, seeking information about last week's offshore Gulf of Mexico oil platform explosion that left one worker dead and another missing.

Spokeswoman Hillary Cohen said the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, which investigates chemical spills, refinery explosions and other industrial accidents, will decide whether to launch a probe into Friday's blast once Houston-based Black Elk responds to the subpoena.

The company has until November 30 to respond, Cohen said. The CSB has authority to subpoena witnesses, but not to issue fines or citations.

The U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), which regulates offshore oil and gas drilling and production, is investigating the blast.

BSEE said on Monday that its investigative team met Black Elk personnel at the platform to go over the agency's plan to collect evidence, interview witnesses and review safety procedures.

Once that information is analyzed, the agency can decide what enforcement plans are appropriate, BSEE Director James Watson said.

On Saturday one of two missing workers was found dead and the U.S. Coast Guard suspended search and rescue efforts. Privately held Black Elk said it expanded its search for the second missing worker.

On Monday, Black Elk did not respond to multiple queries about the status of the search. The Jefferson Parish Coroner's office, where the body of the deceased worker was taken on Saturday, said on Monday it had not received a second body related to the blast.

Both those workers and several others hurt in the blast, are Filipino. Ambassador Jose Cuisa Jr. of the Philippine Embassy in Washington went to Louisiana on Monday to attend to the deceased man's remains, monitor the search and help the families of those injured.

The explosion and fire occurred when workers were welding a pipe on the deck of West Delta Block 32 platform, which sits in 56 feet of water about 17 miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana.

The company told the U.S. Coast Guard that up to 28 gallons of oil in the pipe may have spilled, causing a sheen around the platform. Oil and gas production had been shut down since mid-August, according to Black Elk.

Cohen said information the CSB is seeking includes use of combustible natural gas detectors, Black Elk's safety and environmental management systems and policies and prior safety violations or citations.

Buyers of certificates of deposit interested in supporting banks that support their local communities through fair lending practices can start their search by checking out how well their bank scored on the most recent CRA compliance exam.

Buying CDs from a local community bank or credit union could have a more direct impact on your local economy than buying CDs from a national megabank. And at credit unions, consumers might find better CD rates because they're nonprofit institutions.

"It really depends what national bank reinvests in that community. (Buying a CD) locally, yes, you can expect that to help out economically. The dollars will be reinvested back into the community much faster than it would on a national scale," says Xavier Epps, founder of XNE Financial Advising in Woodbridge, Va.

While keeping banking local could help the local economy, not all community banks are wonderful and not all megabanks are terrible. Savers interested in sustainable business practices should evaluate the impact made by individual branches on the surrounding area.

Intel has just announced that CEO Paul Otellini will be stepping down in May of 2013. The long time executive will be retiring from the company and industry that he has dedicated the last 40 years of his life to, leaving behind a legacy that has seen Intel's dominance in the x86 field grow to almost unapproachable levels. As the fifth chief executive in the company's history he's overseen not only the processor reboot that followed the inefficient Pentium 4, but also played a role in Apple's famous transition from PowerPC to Intel. Otellini and the board of directors will work together over the next six months to ensure a seamless transition of power; however, a successor has yet to be chosen.

The change at the top comes at a time when Intel is facing renewed competition, but from an unexpected source. The rise of smartphones and tablets has seen the ARM architecture and its numerous licensees surge in both mindshare and marketshare. Intel is only now getting into that realm with its ultra low-power Medfield line of x86 chips. Whoever takes over as CEO in May will be facing a landscape that poses serious challenges to the company's CPU dominance.
