One of the most popular cocktails could be considered as the martini which is typically made from gin and vermouth and then adding some olives for garnishing. Garnishing can also be done with pomegranates or even some lemon peels. Martinis are traditionally drunk from the martini glasses which suit this drink admirable and are made for the purpose. Martini glasses can be used to drink other cocktails and they make one of the finest gifts for any occasion such as weddings or birthdays as anyone and everyone would love to receive these beautiful glasses. They are usually available in different sizes and you can also have them customized. They usually have a long stem and a bowl on the top which is made in different shapes. The classical shape is an oversized drinking bowl and one can actually use these in a number of creative ways. For instance you could float a candle or a flower in it or just fill it with olives. Alternatively just make an extra large martini and drink from it.
Martinis are a very stylish drink and if you have the special glasses on any occasion then it really gives a sophisticated touch to the whole event. They can be used instead of serving some candy dishes or ordinary appetizers.
Many of us would have wondered why the martini glasses are shaped in that particular way. This actually dates back to the days when drinking was prohibited in the US. The drink itself also is behind the shape. It is very functional and practical and also looks very attractive. The wide bowl provides a surface tension and gives a good display of the garnishing of olives or pomegranates or any other fruit. The coned shape avoids the separating of the ingredients in the drink. But a few people think that during the days of prohibition, the wide mouth of the drinking bowl made it easier for the people to quickly gulp it down just in case of a police raid as it was considered as illegal alcohol.
As it has a very unique shape the drinker has to hold the martini glass by the stem and not the bowl. This enables keeping the drink cool for a longer period of time. If you hold the drink by the stem, the heat in your body is not allowed to go into the bowl and thence to the drink.
